Your Velocity Points live in your Velocity Frequent Flyer account, not on the card that earned them. Switching your spending to a Qantas-earning card does not remove your existing Velocity points. Velocity Points expire 24 months after the last eligible activity. Velocity does not publish a reinstatement policy, and Velocity Points cannot be transferred to Qantas Points. The strategy comes down to one simple habit. Complete at least one qualifying earn or redemption through your Velocity account every 2 years while you focus your card spending on Qantas Points. Here is what happens when the earning card closes and how the expiry clock works. We also cover the cheapest ways to keep your account active and how to time the switch.
What happens to Velocity Points when the earning card closes
Closing a Velocity earning credit card leaves the Velocity account and every point already in it untouched, because the program membership and the card are separate relationships. Points that have already swept from the card to Velocity are Velocity’s records, not the bank’s. The risk sits with the card issuer. Points that have not yet transferred are subject to the card’s terms. The same applies to any bonus points that have not yet been credited. Some card terms allow the issuer to withhold uncredited bonuses when an account is closed. For example, ANZ’s card offer terms cover accounts cancelled before bonus points are credited. The safest approach is to wait for the final statement’s points to transfer, confirm they have reached your Velocity account, then close the card.
Cards that earn bank points add one step. For example, ANZ Reward Points can convert to Velocity Points at a 2:1 rate through auto-redemption. ANZ Reward Points expire 3 years after they are earned. Any points that have not been converted remain subject to ANZ’s rules after you close the card. Converting your bank points before closing the card moves them into your Velocity account, where Velocity’s program rules apply. See our guide to moving points into Velocity for the conversion process.
How the Velocity expiry clock works and what resets it
Velocity Points expire 24 months after the last eligible activity on the account. The reset rules divide activity into two categories, as explained in our Velocity Points expiry guide. Long-term activity resets the full 24-month clock. This includes earning points from flying, from program partners, and bank transfer programs. Buying points or redeeming any number of points also resets the clock. Velocity explains the rule in its own program update. Every time you earn, redeem or buy points, the balance renews for another 24 months. Short-term activity does not reset the clock. Points received through a Family Points Transfer or Family Pool only remain valid until the end of the following month.
| Activity on the Velocity account | Effect on the expiry clock |
| Points earned from a bank transfer, partner or flight | Resets the full 24 months |
| Any redemption, whatever the size | Resets the full 24 months |
| Points purchased through the program | Resets the full 24 months |
| Points received by Family Transfer or Family Pool | Extends only to the end of the following month |
Family setups have an important distinction to understand. A member whose only incoming points are pooled from a partner’s earnings is not accumulating 24-month resets. A balance can appear active while the points are still approaching expiry. Once points expire, Velocity does not publish a reinstatement process. This makes keeping the account active particularly important.
How to keep the balance alive while every card earns Qantas
One qualifying transaction every 2 years keeps the entire balance from expiring. None of the options requires holding a Velocity earning card. Converting points from an eligible supermarket loyalty program into Velocity can count as qualifying partner activity. A small purchase through the Velocity eStore earns points and resets the clock. A points redemption of any size does the same from the other direction. Set a calendar reminder for the 20-month mark. Pair it with one of these activities to help keep a six-figure balance active at little to no cost. The Velocity balance cannot be transferred to Qantas Points. Velocity Points do not transfer to Qantas Points in either direction, so the switch does not consolidate the two balances and never was going to. The Velocity balance remains available for Velocity redemptions while your Qantas Points balance grows separately. Our rewards points valuation guide values each program separately, based on its December 2025 update. There is one alternative. Transferring Velocity Points to Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer. Velocity Points can be transferred to Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer at 1.55 Velocity Points per KrisFlyer mile, with a minimum transfer of 5,000 points. KrisFlyer miles have a fixed 3-year expiry that cannot be extended by activity. This means the transfer is best suited to points you have a specific redemption plan for. Holding a large balance for years also carries repricing risk. Programs can change their reward tables over time. Consider redeeming a large balance when you have a clear path for it.
How to choose the Qantas side and time the switch
Several banks offer Qantas Points-earning cards. Check the eligibility rules before applying, as exclusion periods can affect your eligibility for a bonus. As of July 2026, several cards offer bonuses for earning Qantas Points. The Qantas Money Platinum offers 80,000 points. The ANZ Frequent Flyer Black offers 90,000 points, plus 40,000 after 12 months. The NAB Qantas Rewards Signature offers 100,000 points, plus 30,000. The Qantas American Express Ultimate offers 50,000 points. Each card has its own minimum spend. Eligibility restrictions can also apply to that issuer’s Qantas cards for 24 months. American Express has an 18-month exclusion period across its cards. Compare the current options in our Qantas points-earning credit cards roundup. Our credit card minimum spend guide explains what counts towards each minimum spend.
- Warning: timing the switch is a multi-step process, and the order protects points in both programs.
- Wait for the old card’s final points transfer to Velocity. Confirm they have reached your Velocity account before closing the card, as uncredited points and bonuses can be withheld.
- Check the new card’s exclusion period against your card history before applying. Missing a bonus because of a 24-month rule can be a significant cost.
- The Qantas Money Platinum’s 40,000-point top-up requires no Qantas Points earned with a credit card in the previous 24 months. Someone switching from Velocity-earning cards may meet this condition, subject to the offer terms.
- Set a reminder to keep your Velocity account active. The new card will not reset your Velocity Points expiry clock. Your Qantas account also needs qualifying activity at least once every 18 months. See our points expiry round-up for a comparison of the rules across programs.
