Best Reward Seats from Adelaide

How the Programs Compare

Adelaide is now one of the better cities in the country to spend Qantas Points, measured by how much of its international lineup sits on Qantas reward tables. As of July 2026, five airlines sit on its international lineup, including Qatar Airways, Malaysia Airlines and Cathay Pacific on the partner table, Fiji Airways on the main table, and Emirates on its own. Velocity answers with partners of its own, including nonstop service to the United States. Here is how the programs compare from Adelaide, and how to use the connection maths when a route does need an east coast hop.

Adelaide’s international build-up changes the points equation

The old assumption that Adelaide points trips begin with a positioning flight east is out of date. Adelaide Airport’s own reporting shows international traffic surging, up 33.1 per cent year on year in February 2026, on the back of new and expanded flying. The lineup now includes:

  • Singapore Airlines to Changi, Malaysia Airlines daily to Kuala Lumpur since February 2026, and Qatar Airways daily to Doha
  • Emirates daily to Dubai and Cathay Pacific’s seasonal Hong Kong service
  • Air New Zealand to Auckland plus seasonal Christchurch flights, a seasonal Qantas Auckland service, and Fiji Airways to Nadi
  • United’s San Francisco flights that launched in December 2025
  • Chinese carriers, with China Southern flying Guangzhou and China Eastern returning to Shanghai from late June 2026

For a points collector, the question is whose seats your points can buy, and the two programs split the map in different ways.

The growth is visible on the ground and on the route map. Qantas has begun flying its new A220s between Adelaide and Brisbane, Jetstar based a sixth aircraft in the city in late 2025, and Emirates’ Dubai service gained a Premium Economy cabin when the A350 took over the route from December 2025. More metal and more cabins mean more reward inventory to hunt.

Qantas Points from Adelaide

Qatar Airways, Malaysia Airlines and Cathay Pacific all sit on the Qantas partner Classic Flight Reward table. The separate price list Qantas publishes for rewards on partner airlines puts Doha, Kuala Lumpur and seasonal Hong Kong within non-stop reach of a Qantas Points balance. It’s priced by distance zone, with taxes, fees, and carrier charges, and includes airline-imposed surcharges added to reward bookings, quoted at booking.

Fiji Airways goes one better, pricing off the same table as Qantas itself, so Adelaide to Nadi costs exactly what a Qantas flight over that distance would. Emirates’ daily Dubai service is also bookable on the standalone Emirates table, which took effect on 31 March 2026. They are dearer than before, as Business fares from Adelaide to Dubai increased from 113,900 to 125,400 Points. Though Economy still holds under general partner rates at 47,600 against 51,800 for the same band, as of July 2026. As well as Qantas’ own seasonal Auckland flights, which cover the Tasman in summer. The full pricing sits in the Qantas Classic Flight Reward tables.

Domestically, Adelaide is well placed in the cheap zones. Melbourne to Adelaide costs 9,200 Qantas Points for an Economy reward plus around $56 in charges. While Business is at 19,300 Qantas Points on the same band, and the east coast capitals are all within short-band reach. When a destination requires connecting through Melbourne or Sydney, remember the table’s total distance when connections stay within the booking window. So the add-on sector often costs little or nothing extra in points if the combined mileage holds inside the same zone. Our guide to booking a Classic Flight Reward seat shows how to run those numbers before you book.

The booking mechanics are the standard Qantas set, and they favour planners. Classic Rewards release up to 353 days out for elite members and carry no online booking fee. As of July 2026, changes cost 5,000 Points per person, and cancellations cost 6,000 points, so locking a seasonal seat early and adjusting later is a low-risk strategy.

Velocity Points from Adelaide

Velocity Points from Adelaide book United’s new nonstop to San Francisco, plus Singapore Airlines and Qatar Airways through the partner tables, with the Air New Zealand codeshare covering the Tasman for earning and status. The headline is United. San Francisco is Adelaide’s first nonstop link to the United States. As United is a Velocity partner airline, this makes the route a Velocity redemption target priced from the partner tables. Singapore Airlines’ Changi service and Qatar Airways’ Doha service are both Velocity partners too. With the standing caution that Velocity now applies carrier charges to Singapore Airlines and Qatar Airways bookings. Across the Tasman, Air New Zealand’s Adelaide flying earns Velocity Points and Status Credits under the codeshare, with redemptions limited to Points + Pay rather than Reward Seats. Virgin Australia’s own aircraft carry the domestic backbone, with reward seats priced according to the demand-based domestic tiers.

The earn side runs on the familiar rails. Bank points convert to Velocity Points at 2 to 1 from ANZ Rewards, NAB Rewards, the Amplify Rewards family and Amex Membership Rewards, and at 3 to 1 from Westpac Altitude Rewards, all as of July 2026. This is covered in our guide to moving points into Velocity, and in our Velocity credit card round-up. Two Velocity house rules to note. Reward Seats earn no Points, and no Status Credits, the separate currency that counts towards status tiers. Also, upgrades to Business are open to members on Economy Choice and Economy Flex fares. For households, Family Pooling can sweep the family’s Points and Status Credits to one member. Often the difference between four small balances and one usable redemption. Velocity transfer bonuses appear several times a year and shorten the runway to any of these seats.

Seasonal Adelaide routes shape when reward seats open

Adelaide’s map breathes with the calendar, and that matters for points planning. Cathay Pacific’s Hong Kong flights and Air New Zealand’s Christchurch service both run seasonally through the warmer months. The Qantas Auckland service operates on a summer schedule, and China Eastern’s Shanghai return service begins as a seasonal operation. China Southern, by contrast, moves its Guangzhou flying to a year-round schedule from March 2026. A reminder that the calendar is tightening in Adelaide’s favour. One planning note for the United route. It launched as a summer season trial, so confirm the schedule holds for your dates before building a redemption around it.

More broadly, United gives Star Alliance a third presence in Adelaide alongside Singapore Airlines and Air New Zealand. This matters for anyone holding KrisFlyer miles or Airpoints. Reward availability follows a schedule. When a seasonal route loads its calendar, the early weeks of the booking window are the moment to strike, and when it pauses, the fallback is connection pricing. This is because the Qantas tables price based on total distance when connections stay within the booking window; an east coast hop often adds fewer points than expected. The other wildcard is Air New Zealand itself, whose Auckland hub opens the wider New Zealand and Pacific map via Airpoints (Airpoints Dollars) at fixed face value. This is through Star Alliance programs, or Qantas Points at partner-table rates, with the options mapped in our guide to Air New Zealand Airpoints.

The verdict is, for Asia and the Gulf, Adelaide is now a Qantas Points town. With three partner-table airlines and Emirates flying nonstop from the terminal. For North America, Velocity holds the local trump card in United’s San Francisco service. For everything else, total distance pricing on connections keeps both balances useful. And the smartest Adelaide play is often simply holding whichever currency your spending builds fastest and letting the seasonal reward calendars decide the destination. As ever, confirm the seat before transferring bank points, because transfers are irreversible. Our overview of Qantas and Velocity partners shows the full spread each balance can reach.
