IHG Rewards

Intercontinental Hotels Group (IHG) is a major international hotel chain encompassing brands such as Crowne Plaza, Intercontinental, Regent, Holiday Inn and more.

IHG Rewards Club is the loyalty program of the group, where you can earn points on stays to use as rewards later, as well as earn status so frequent travellers have more benefits and recognition.

All members also get lower rates on most stays, so it makes sense to sign-up if you are going to book with an IHG property directly.

What are the IHG Reward Levels?

The IHG Rewards program has four different Club tiers, plus a paid membership program. The tiers are:

  • Club: base-level tier with access to member rates.
  • Gold Elite: earned with 10 nights or 10,000 qualifying points.
  • Platinum Elite: earned with 40 nights or 40,000 qualifying points
  • Spire Elite: earned with 75 nights or 75,000 qualifying points

Some IHG status benefits aren’t valid at Intercontinental Hotels. This is where a paid Intercontinental Ambassador membership comes in handy (explained later below).

IHG Rewards Gold Elite benefits

As the first premium status level, you don’t get too much with Gold Elite. Perks include extended check-out, priority check-in, a welcome amenity, 10% bonus points and non-expiry of points. There are no blackout dates for reward bookings

IHG Rewards Platinum Elite benefits

Platinum Elite builds on the above, offering complimentary room upgrades, elite rollover nights and 50% points bonus. Room upgrades don’t necessarily mean getting a better category of room. It could simply be the same category on a higher floor, corner room or newly-renovated.

IHG Rewards Spire Elite benefits

As well as the Platinum-level tiers, the top-level Spire Elite status gives dedicated customer service phone assistance, Hertz Gold Plus Rewards Five Star status, early check-in, 100% bonus points earnings, as well as many other smaller benefits with stays.

Intercontinental Ambassador benefits

The paid Intercontinental Ambassador program costs $200 USD a year ($315 AUD with our currently weak currency), and gives you instant Platinum Elite IHG status. It also gives special perks when staying at Intercontinental hotels worldwide that you wouldn’t normally get with IHG status, such as guaranteed upgrades, 4pm checkout, a complimentary weekend night stay and $20 USD restaurants and bar credits.

How to earn IHG Rewards points

The main way to earn IHG Rewards points is by staying at their hotels. The bigger brands offer 10 points for each $1 USD (or equivalent currency) spent on your hotel room bill. This normally includes the room rate and any incidentals you charge to the room, such as dining.

IHG runs many bonus offers where you can earn thousands more points on certain stays. Recurring offers include ‘A Greener Stay’, where foregoing housekeeping can earn you 500 bonus points.

You can buy IHG points to build up your balance to the next reward. Our guide to IHG points promotions is updated regularly, so you can see when the best offers are. The lowest rate to purchase promotional points to date is $0.50 USD per point.

IHG also has partners that offer IHG Rewards points on purchases, such as Hertz and Thrifty.

How to redeem IHG Rewards points

IHG Rewards points are often used to book reward night stays at hotels. Reward Nights are valid for a base double or king room for one night, tax included. The number of points needed for a stay depends on the property and can be viewed when making a booking on the IHG website.

For excellent value stays, consider using your balance for IHG PointBreaks promotions, where you can often get a room for 5,000 points. When buying points on sale, that’s as low as USD $25!

What effect will COVID-19 have on the IHG Rewards program?

IHG have made changes to their loyalty program to support their members to manage their status, points, and benefits in 2020 and beyond, cognisant of how hard it will be to travel for the rest of the year.

Membership Status

The number of nights or points required to earn status in 2020 has been reduced by 25%.

Those who have already earned status in 2020 will automatically have it extended until January 2022.

The table below summarises these changes:

Ways to Qualify for IHG Rewards status in 2020 because of COVID-19

Points Expiration

If you have status, your points never expire. So, for those who have already retained or earned status in 2020, your IHG Rewards points will be valid until January 2022 at the earliest.

For IHG Rewards Club members with no status, points expire after 12 months of inactivity. So, for members with points due to expire from 1 April, IHG are extending the expiration date to 31 December 2020.

If you’re concerned about your points expiring after these dates, you can just donate some, or buy a small number to extend their validity.

Other changes

Those who have joined the paid Intercontinental Ambassador program will receive a complimentary three-month membership extension, with an extension of the same duration to their unredeemed Weekend Night Certificates.

If you’re one of the few with invite only membership to Royal Ambassador and Inner Circle, your 2020 earned status will similarly be extended through to January 2022, and you’ll also receive new stay certificates in 2021.
