Minimum spend, T&Cs apply. New American Express Card Members only.
American Express Platinum Card Members will also receive up to $400 in Global Dining Credit10 per calendar year until 31 December 2026. That’s $200 to spend at over 100 restaurants in Australia and up to $200 at over 2,000 restaurants in 20 countries overseas. A separate one-time enrolment is required for each credit.
The Platinum Card is the top-tier publicly available card within the suite of charge cards offered by American Express. With an annual fee of $1,450, you would expect a large range of benefits to be included with the Card, and it doesn’t disappoint in this regard.
Ongoing perks of the card include a $450 annual Travel Credit5, complimentary lounge access to over 1,550 lounges at over 500 airports and 140 countries worldwide6, complimentary status, and memberships with a number of hotel loyalty programs including a paid premium membership to ALL Accor+ Explorer18 (valued at $349), a complimentary The Australian premium subscription11, and a comprehensive suite of insurance cover14 including but not limited to Medical Emergency Expenses, Travel Inconvenience, Trip Cancellation and Amendment, Smartphone Screen, and Loss Damage Waiver. The Travel insurance coverage is available to both the Primary Card Member and up to 4 Additional Card Members.
Given that the Card has many travel-related benefits, it is aimed at frequent travellers who can derive excellent value from the Card. If you are only an occasional traveller, you may wish to look at a lower-cost American Express Card, such as the American Express Explorer Card, that is still enrolled in the Membership Rewards Program4 but has fewer travel-related benefits.
For business owners whose expenses are mostly business-related rather than for personal dining or travel, the features of the American Express Business Platinum Card may be more suited for you.
It is worth noting that the Platinum Card is a charge card². This is different from a regular credit card in that the balance needs to be paid off in full every month as opposed to just a minimum balance in order to avoid any charges or penalties.
Unless American Express tell you otherwise, your American Express Charge card comes with flexible spending power3, also known as no-pre-set spending limit. This means that the amount you can spend is dynamic and can adapt based on your transaction patterns, your businesses credit rating and other factors. The way you use your Card can help your spending power grow, particularly in the first few months. To help maximise your spending power, you can make regular transactions and don’t miss any payments.
Earning points from spend on the Platinum Card
With the American Platinum Card, you will earn Membership Rewards Points.4
Membership Rewards partners with the major frequent flyer programs in the region, allowing points transfers out to over 10 airline and hotel partners.7
While the Platinum Card automatically enrolled in Membership Rewards4 program, it does come with the additional benefit of being able to transfer to Qantas Frequent Flyer, a relatively rare perk in the market and one that is not available to other American Express Cards aside from the Platinum Business.
Lounge access with the American Express Platinum Card
There are several lounge options6 you can take advantage of as a Platinum Card Member.
Virgin Australia offers the primary Card Member unlimited access to Virgin Australia domestic lounges6, including the ability to bring in a guest travelling with you. You and your guest need to be travelling with Virgin Australia to gain access.
You can bring two guests to the American Express lounges, as well as children travelling with you, and is usually limited to 2 visits a year with most eligible American Express Cards. However, those holding The Platinum Card are able to access American Express and Centurion lounges on an unlimited basis, regardless of which airline you are flying.
You’ll also receive a Priority Pass lounge membership6 for you and an Additional Platinum Card Member, with each being able to bring a guest to join them when travelling on the same flight.
The Priority Pass benefits that extend from the complimentary membership through the Platinum Card are not identical to paid memberships. Platinum Card members only have access to Priority Pass lounges and not eateries, which are usually found in smaller airports that do not have lounges available.
Platinum Card Members also get access to Plaza Premium6, which operates a small number of about 50 high-quality lounges worldwide, including great lounges in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.
Plaza Premium Lounge Brisbane
Additionally, when travelling with Delta, a Platinum Card Member can access Delta SkyClub lounges.
Access to travel booking benefits and services through Platinum Travel Service & American Express Travel Online
American Express Travel is available to all Amex Card Members but Platinum Card Members get additional benefits, which include the ability to use the $450 Travel Credit5 that is included as part of the Platinum Card offering.
Note:You will need to use your annual $450 Travel Credit on a single travel booking of $450 or more on your eligible Card, made through American Express Travel Online. Your booking will be charged in full to your American Express Platinum Card and American Express will then credit $450 to your Account within 3 business days but may take up to 30 days. You will still receive your $450 Travel Credit each year, and your Travel Credit anniversary will remain the same. Click here for the full Terms & Conditions.
For Business Class and First Class fares, Platinum Card Members can take advantage of the International Airline Program through Amex Travel which offers up to 20% off airfares on a number of world-leading airlines.
These include British Airways, Delta Air Lines, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Japan Airlines, LAN, Malaysia Airlines, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways, United and Virgin Australia.
The benefit is available to both Primary and Supplementary Cardmembers and available on First and Business Class fares.

Access to the Amex Experiences App
The Amex Experiences App makes it easier for you to access the Premium Concierge service, and check out the latest information on Platinum benefits, travel offers, events and recommended merchants.
The App is available for download on Google Play or the App Store. This is not a replacement for the Amex App but can be used alongside it.
Mobile wallet integration
American Express Cards work with Apple Pay®, Google Wallet™ and Samsung Pay, meaning you can use this card on your smartphone for easier payments.
Read the Point Hacks guide to using Apple Pay or for using Google Wallet and Samsung Pay, including instructions on how to add your American Express card to those services.
With this feature set up, it means you could still use your NFC-enabled phone to make purchases with your American Express account, even if your physical card is lost or stolen and pending replacement.
Using the Platinum Card overseas
If you are looking to use the Platinum Card overseas, there is a 3% foreign exchange fee levied on all overseas transactions. This is a shortfall of the Australian version of the Card, especially given that the much cheaper US variant of the Platinum Card comes with no foreign exchange fees.
Card Members, however, will earn the full number of points for all overseas transactions, so long as the transaction is not an excluded transaction for points earn.
Taking advantage of Additional Card Members
The Platinum Card offers additional cards linked to your primary account for Card Members over 16 years of age.
The Priority Pass membership can be used by one Additional Platinum Card Member as well as the primary account holder.
The following statuses can also be registered for at least one Additional Platinum Card Member:
Marriott Bonvoy Gold Elite9
Radisson Rewards Premium17
Hilton Honors Gold8
Hertz Gold Plus Rewards
Avis Preferred
Registration of status benefits for Additional Card Members is handled mostly through the Amex website once you have set up the Card Members on the account.
You can also get itemised transaction reports for Additional card members through the Amex website or your statement.
Sign up for Amex offers
Amex Offers13 is a program that provides a statement credit to your account for making an eligible purchase. Think of it as an instant cashback offer without having to deal with any paperwork.
By logging into your app or the Amex website, you can add promotions from certain retailers to your Platinum Card, meaning you could get something like $15 off when spending $75 or more at Heinemann Duty-Free and paying with this card.
Considering this card for Business-related transactions?
American Express offer a range of both business and consumer charge and credit cards. They do permit business transactions to be made on personal cards, unlike some other banks, but you might find some of the other business-focused benefits of the business cards to be appealing or more appropriate.
So – if you’re a sole trader or a business looking to earn points with your business spend – this card would still work for that purpose.
Eligibility criteria for bonus points for existing American Express Card Members
American Express are quite specific about whether existing Card Members will be eligible for bonus points if they apply for a card, are approved, and meet the minimum spend criteria.
Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for this offer.
American Express don’t allow existing Card Members, even for different types of American Express cards (e.g. Charge, Credit or Business) to be eligible for bonus points offers for cards in a different family.
Summing up: the American Express Platinum Card
This card is likely to appeal most to those who travel frequently and can utilise most of the travel benefits of the card. Given the high annual fee of $1,450 every year, a cost-benefit analysis should be made, especially if you are a borderline frequent traveller. For those that rarely travel, other American Express cards such as the American Express Explorer Card might be better suited.

I think your Krisflyer transfer rate is still showing as 1.125 mile/$1. It is now 0.33 mile/$1 :(.
Do you guys know if lets say I manage to sign up for this credit card and spent 5k in the first 2 months. That means my yearly fee will be waved, right? so my question is:
Do I get charged monthly the 1,450 divided by 12 = $120?
So I would be reimbursed for the first one before I spend the total of 5k?
Also, the biggest doubt, lets say it comes to the end of my free year, can i cancel it just prior ? Its manly to get the 200,000 points and have a feel for the card, but I’m just scared that I will have to end up paying the $1,450 lol
You will still have to pay that yearly fee, this will be deducted from your first statement. For new AMEX card holders who did not hold other AMEX cards for 18 months prior you get bonus points.
Otherwise if you spend about 100000 per year you can recoup the annual fee.
Amex sign-up offers can vary and be targeted, so it’s possible. You may have been targeted for a specific offer on a specific device, different from what was publicly available.
I am wanting to use the platinum card for personal and business use. Will they give me an additional card so I can put all my business transactions on one card and all my personal transactions on the other card?
Does anyone know why AMEX charges foreign transaction fees for Asutralian cards but not on the American ones? Also, any idea why they scrapped the new member offer when switching from a credit card to charge card?
I heard from an Amex rep on online chat that August 17 2020 will see the companion reserve credit card lose the $400 travel credit. Do u think u can get any info on what the change will be? I’m thinking about applying for it. The rep said if I get the card beforehand, I will maintain that feature post the change and only the newer cards issued will have the new (if any) benefit (which is unusual as my plat edge from a long time ago had its features changed). The rep didn’t have any other info on the change. Thanks
3 years later and this prediction turned out to be correct. the companion card was GREAT extra value, now there is a $400 dining offer which is maybe supposed to be the same value. but not to me. now I wish I’d not cancelled my card when travel stopped during pandemic, but it was hard to justify keeping it when stuck at home for years.
I know how you feel.
The annual fee was $1250 and you get $450 travel credit on the platinum charge and $400 on the companion.
You get the Accor valued at $400 and was complete worth it.
Plus unlimited lounge with Amex and unlimited priority pass. Plus you could add 1 supplementary card holder to get this benefit.
I got rid of my card just before COVID.
Hi, I only have one AMEX card and I like the benefits this card offers. I know that the minimum salary requirements is $100,000. What is the likelihood of someone earning less than this successfully applying for the card? Thanks Sam
In such situations, your most accurate answer will come directly from American Express, so its best to contact them and let them know that you would like this card, but that your income is below the minimum requirement. If it is unlikely that they can approve you based on your current financial situation, they may be able to suggest another card that is more suitable.
I’m wondering how many of the features are actually available to supplementary cardholders. Such as phone screen, travel and all the other insurances if they use the card to pay, if they were to book hotel through FHR/THC do they get late checkout, up to USD100 etc?
I also note you mention “at least” 1 additional person can be registered for elite hotel membership – how so “at least”?
I would suggest contacting the Amex Platinum customer service directly to determine eligibility of benefits for the supplementary card. Some benefits do extend to supplementary cards, while others don’t.
The link should take you to a page that says 120,000 points. We are working with American Express to get this rectified ASAP. If possible, please withhold from applying until the link shows the correct points figure.
I’ve noticed towards the top of this page, https://www.americanexpress.com/au/credit-cards/the-platinum-card/ it is saying “Transfer your points to a choice of 10 major Airline Reward Partner Programs5 including one to one transfer rate to Qantas Frequent Flyer and Velocity Frequent Flyer” … 1:1 transfer rate to QFF? Is this a typo or has this changed since 14th April 2019? If I do sign up for the card, I shall do so through the link from Point Hacks!
With the travel $ credit benefits, do these have to be used within a 12 month period?? IF you dont use the $ credit, does it roll over to the next year?
Yes, your travel credit must be used within a 12 month period, otherwise it is forfeited for that year. You will of course receive a new credit for the following 12 month period, however they cannot be rolled over and combined.
Check this little doozie in Section P of the LDWC for rental cars :
“Geographical Scope means worldwide, including country of domicile, provided the rental takes place further than one hundred and fifty (150) kilometres from the permanent or temporary place of residence You are currently residing in.”
So any rental in your home town is excluded…I wonder how many folks have been tripped up with this?
Seems very silly to me as even my Westpac Black doesn’t have such a ridiculous and more to the point, unexpected, exclusion. Talk about read the fine print…
I’ll be having a word with them soon as my renewal fee is about to hit..
Yes, thanks for bringing this to our readers attention. I suspect it’s due to the fact that the included insurance generally relates to travel, which in most instances either requires flights or if its within 150km of home, the use of your own car. However we’ve all probably had reason to hire a car locally for various reasons, so it would be good if this restriction was not in place.
I would suggest the value of the Priority Pass membership is greater than stated. The quoted amount assumes 1 Prestige level membership, but the card allows both the primary and 1 additional cardholder to have membership which doubles the value. Also the Amex offer allows you to bring a guest in for free where the paid for Prestige membership charges for each guest to take into the lounge with you.
Scam……I recently joined this program and have being given nothing but grief…..Other than the fact that no one deals with AMEX here in North Queensland and I have being robbed my entitled points. My offer was spend $4500 over 3mths and receive 120 000 points…I spent over $12000 in 3mths and received 56 000points..I was told that because I didn’t spend $1500 in the first month ($1400 I spent) Im not entitled to the first 40 000points and they couldn’t explain why I didnt receive the remainder 80 000….just silence on the phone, they are the first to request money and upfront fee’s giving me 1 week to pay once the cards were received and activated. Poor customer services everytime we spoke….”when are you going to pay your bill its due in a couple of days” they do not look after their customers and do not want repeat business…oh and don’t over pay you charge card as well as its extremely difficult to get that money back as well, it doesn’t go on the card as a credit, it just goes missing is the best way i can discribe it (I’m still chasing $900 and they have suspended the account in the meantime)….I can’t cancel the card either as I lose what little points they have given me nor can I transfer them to a credit card…They are the worse financial company I have had to deal with and was made to feel small and insignificant against bigger spenders out there……I doubt this will make it to the website but I am writing this onto other product review sites of my tainted expereince with this finanical company….if I can save one person financial stress and heart ache then it was worth it
G’day Keith,
I am having trouble trying to get this addition card. I am getting told it is not possible when I phone amex do you have a contact who knows about this additional card because the couple times I have rung i can not find anyone who knows about it.
Business expenditure can be put on the card. American Express offer a unique option to add an ‘additional’ card (this is different to an additional card member, as outlined above). An additional card is second card that’s issued in the cardholder’s name with a different card number, which makes it administratively ideal for using your primary card for personal transactions, while you keep the additional card to one side for business transactions.
Mmmm that sounds frustrating. I would recommend reaching out to Amex via their online chat function rather than by phone—maybe that will give them more time to research it and find the right person. Let us know how you go.
4 phone calls over 2 months and 1 online chat and on the 5th phone call managed to find someone who knew what I was talking about.
Card is said to be on its way.
Oh my, what a process. Glad it finally worked out in the end! For anyone else reading this that is in the same predicament, do you have any advice on how to fast-track this the quickest?
With amex platinum perk I matched my SPG Gold to Marriott Gold, when the change over happened it was Platinum Elite on my Marriott account but still Gold Elite on my SPG account and then as of today both have been downgraded to Gold Elite?
Did anyone else have this issue?
I would think that the higher account would be honored?
This is exactly what happened to me and a number of others. SPG Gold should match to Marriott Gold Elite in the new program, not Platinum Elite—that was a temporary mistake.
Am I missing something or is the regular spend earn rate of 1 point per $ spent disappointing for a card with this high annual fee? I have been considering this card for the benefits, but feel I may need to also retain a card like the Amex explorer just for the earn rate? Or is there work around without another annual fee that I am missing?
In order to get the hotel status benefits, is it required to pay the room expense by this card? Or can I redeem free room by points then just present this card to the reception then may have the room upgraded?
You don’t need to use the card for the hotel stay at all. When you become a cardmember, you enrol in the elite status benefits through the American Express page. Then you can use whichever card you want for hotel stays.
This is my main card and it’s great to see the return of the Accor Plus benefit as this is something I’ve been purchasing anyway. A few things frustrate me however:
1. The 0.5 on government spend and utilities. When paying for things like rates or Internet bill, I have to use my Visa instead because it gives me 1:1 (Qantas) points.
2. The currency conversion commission as mentioned above, especially since it’s included in the US card which is substantially cheaper. I have a separate point earning MasterCard without the fees instead.
3. Standard spend gives 1:1 points when other Amex Platinum cards give 1.5 points per $1. Shouldn’t the flagship card have the best everything Amex has to offer?
Has anyone ever had any luck negotiating the sign-up bonus even though they are an existing cardholder?
I spend a fair amount of money on my Platinum Edge and my guess would be that Amex would lose more money if I cancelled by card for 18 months to qualify for the sign-up bonus, rather than award me the bonus points for signing up for the Platinum Charge.
Just wondering if anyone had been successful in this approach?
Hi Matt and Keith – are you aware if the Reserve card with its $400 travel credit is still available as a complimentary option, given the updated card benefits?
Sorry for the delayed reply here – Yes, the Platinum Reserve is definitely still available with the revised benefits of the Charge. We’ll be writing this up in full soon.
Hi, I will be heading through Munich airport today, flying with Lufthansa. Can anyone confirm that with platinum card I will have access to Lufthansa lounge? I note that this is mentioned on this page, just trying to confirm that this offer extends to Australian platinum charge card holders. Thanks
I think your Krisflyer transfer rate is still showing as 1.125 mile/$1. It is now 0.33 mile/$1 :(.
Sorry, couldn’t edit – 0.74 mile/$1 🙁
Do you guys know if lets say I manage to sign up for this credit card and spent 5k in the first 2 months. That means my yearly fee will be waved, right? so my question is:
Do I get charged monthly the 1,450 divided by 12 = $120?
So I would be reimbursed for the first one before I spend the total of 5k?
Also, the biggest doubt, lets say it comes to the end of my free year, can i cancel it just prior ? Its manly to get the 200,000 points and have a feel for the card, but I’m just scared that I will have to end up paying the $1,450 lol
thanks guys
You will still have to pay that yearly fee, this will be deducted from your first statement. For new AMEX card holders who did not hold other AMEX cards for 18 months prior you get bonus points.
Otherwise if you spend about 100000 per year you can recoup the annual fee.
Hi do you know if the additional cardholder has access to the Centurion Lounge in the US? Can they also bring 2 guests in
A question, did I just miss a 225K MR points sign up bonus?
I could have sworn I saw one last week or so …
Amex sign-up offers can vary and be targeted, so it’s possible. You may have been targeted for a specific offer on a specific device, different from what was publicly available.
I am wanting to use the platinum card for personal and business use. Will they give me an additional card so I can put all my business transactions on one card and all my personal transactions on the other card?
Are lounge access to Plaza premium lounge limited to primary card holder or is it available to additional card holders as well ?
Hi Harrison, the Amex page indicates that Additional Card Members do have Plaza Premium access as well:

Are referral points in addition to sign up points for Amex Platinum card holders?
If you decide to cancel your card do you get a pro-rata refund of the annual fee?
Hi Stewart, Amex (and most other banks) don’t usually offer pro-rata on annual fees. NAB does, based on reader reports.
Does anyone know why AMEX charges foreign transaction fees for Asutralian cards but not on the American ones? Also, any idea why they scrapped the new member offer when switching from a credit card to charge card?
You may want to update or re-confirm with Amex regarding Lufthansa lounges post 31/3/21 https://www.americanexpress.com/us/campaigns/lufthansa/
Thanks
Is this true? Haven’t heard anything official as yet.
Thanks Sam
Hi Sam
Hi Henri
I would suggest contacting the Amex Platinum customer service directly to determine eligibility of benefits for the supplementary card. Some benefits do extend to supplementary cards, while others don’t.
Just applied via link for Amex Platinum and their website only shows 80,000 points for $3k in 3 months.
Didn’t show 120k….?
Hi Andy
Thanks for bringing this to our attention.
Hi thanks for the write up
With the travel $ credit benefits, do these have to be used within a 12 month period?? IF you dont use the $ credit, does it roll over to the next year?
Hi Timbo
Hi The Frank Report
Yes, thanks for bringing this to our readers attention. I suspect it’s due to the fact that the included insurance generally relates to travel, which in most instances either requires flights or if its within 150km of home, the use of your own car. However we’ve all probably had reason to hire a car locally for various reasons, so it would be good if this restriction was not in place.
Thanks for your response, that’s disappointing. Are you aware if you are allowed children in addition to the one guest allowance?
Hi Mike
The terms clearly state that children are classified as guests, so unfortunately not.
Do you know if a supplementary cardholder gains access into the velocity lounge?
Hi Mike
Access is only granted to the Primary card holder and one guest only.
Are you aware if the additional card holder would be able to access the virgin lounge without the primary card holder present?
Poor customer services everytime we spoke….”when are you going to pay your bill its due in a couple of days” they do not look after their customers and do not want repeat business…oh and don’t over pay you charge card as well as its extremely difficult to get that money back as well, it doesn’t go on the card as a credit, it just goes missing is the best way i can discribe it (I’m still chasing $900 and they have suspended the account in the meantime)….I can’t cancel the card either as I lose what little points they have given me nor can I transfer them to a credit card…They are the worse financial company I have had to deal with and was made to feel small and insignificant against bigger spenders out there……I doubt this will make it to the website but I am writing this onto other product review sites of my tainted expereince with this finanical company….if I can save one person financial stress and heart ache then it was worth it
Hi All,
Does anyone know when the 120,000 Bonus MR expired? I believe it was 40,000 bonus MR points for each $1500 spent in the first 3 months.
Thanks in Advance!
Am I able to use my travel credit on FHC bookings and still recover the perks?
If we get Gold Elite from this card, how many nights more do we need before we hit Platinum status?
Full info on elite status benefits in the new program is here.
Can I use this card mainly for business purpose and get the annual fee consider as Tax deductible expenses
We cannot provide individual financial advice, so this is best discussed with your accountant.
What do you get in return for paying an international transaction fee apart from a fleecing?
Is there a way to get the bonus points for an existing AMEX Explorer Card holder?
Nope, you’d have to cancel that card and wait 18 months to apply for another Amex card. Read more here.
I got the 100k signup bonus a month ago while still having a current platinum edge card
did not expect it….but it arrived none the less
You forgot to mention, the card is now metal!
Hi there,
The fees is now 1,450 and not 1,200 AUD.
Refer to website.
The income requirement of $100k is before or after tax, and if inclusive of exclusive of Super? Thanks.
Before tax (gross income) and exclusive of super.
Hi, I will be heading through Munich airport today, flying with Lufthansa. Can anyone confirm that with platinum card I will have access to Lufthansa lounge? I note that this is mentioned on this page, just trying to confirm that this offer extends to Australian platinum charge card holders. Thanks
(Sorry, on my phone and accidentally replied to an old comment rather than making a new comment)
Hi Jacob
Yes, the benefit does extend to the Australian Platinum card.
Please refer to the following page for lounge access availability: https://global.americanexpress.com/lounge-access/the-platinum-card.
So the bonus sigh-up rewards points when transferred to QF are on a 1 for 1 basis?
That’s correct, or more if you transfer during a transfer bonus.
Although those bonuses are often targeted to previous transferrers so no guarantee you can leverage one of those offers.
