Why should I use a Velocity transfer promotion?
We’re big fans of transfer promotions from flexible reward programs to Velocity Frequent Flyer, particularly when the offer is 15% more points (or higher) and you have a specific flight goal in mind.
However, unless you have a specific goal, we suggest preserving the flexibility of your points. Just because an offer is running doesn’t mean you have to accept it.
Are you after KrisFlyer miles? For many partners, it’s worth transferring to Velocity with the bonus, which gives you slightly more miles now. Using American Express Membership Rewards as an example:
- 30,000 MR points = 10,000 KrisFlyer miles with a direct conversion.
- 30,000 MR points = 16,500 Velocity Points (inc. 15% bonus) = 11,129 KrisFlyer miles

Velocity redemption promotions
They have previously offered double promotions—encouraging those of you with stockpiled credit card program points an incentive to move them over to Velocity, whilst also rewarding those with points in their accounts already—although 15% seems to be the norm.
Any discount on redemptions is usually for around 12 months from the date of booking, so if you hold on until the end of the promotion it opens up the calendar for you. The redemption discount is applicable to any Virgin-operated flight, both domestic and international.

Summing up
These Velocity promotions are usually a great deal if you have a stash of credit card or hotel program points you want to transfer over to Velocity. However, the current offer is only available to customers who are apart of the American Express Ascent & Premium Ascent Membership Rewards Programs.
Don’t forget, along with Virgin Australia, you can also use Velocity Points on airline partners such as Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Air Canada and more.

Can anyone confirm if Citi is part of the transfer bonus promo? NAB is the credit provider and issuer of Citi credit cards, however I suspect this promo is restricted to NAB branded cards only?
Brandon, just checking your maths on the transfer of AMEX membership rewards points to a Krisflyer account via Velocity Points.
Isn’t the conversion rate 2:1 meaning that 30,000 MR points equates to 15,000 velocity points and after applying a 15% bonus results in a total of 17,250 not 16,500 velocity points?
I recently transfered 1500 point into Velocity from NAB which I can see , but no bonus points ? does it show straight away or just when the promo ends
Has they announce a bonus for August yet ?
Just did the transfer from Amex.
Velocity points appeared – with the bonus – within seconds.
I was very surprised and very impressed.
The T&C for the ANZ Rewards Auto Transfer offer says bonus points paid under a new credit card offer make you ineligible for the 20% bonus. Do you read this to be only those bonus points paid during the promotion period Feb-Apr 2025 make you ineligible? I do have a bonus ANZ Rewards points that were paid to me back in 2024, and am thinking of taking up this offer so long as they are eligible. Interested in some views, thank you.
August 1 and never received the bonus points. Complete scam.
Hi Jordy, what reason did Velocity give for not providing their advertised bonus points when you contacted them to complain?
Does anyone have a contact at velocity aside from the “compliments and complaints form” to resolve a problem with it conveniently not crediting my 15% flybuys bonus despite meeting all terms and conditions?
I just emailed [email protected]
They tried to wriggle out of paying mine, saying i wasn’t eligible because i turned off auto transfer after the transfer happened. I explained the terms didn’t mention that – been chasing a response for 4 weeks – but saw on weekend they’ve now given me the 15% bonus points (though still no reply to my email)
The 15% velocity transfer bonus is also available to the Commbank awards program until 29 March 2024.
Has anyone had the bonus points appear as yet from the November 2023 offer? Wondering if it’s just me…….I thought they were supposed to arrive by Feb 29th but I don’t have them yet.
nvm, they just turned up now.
Anyone else not receive their 20% auto transfer bonus from ANZ Rewards?
T&C’s said the bonus points would be added by February 2024, but I am yet to receive those points
I just posted the same, I don’t have them yet either.
Spoke too soon, they just arrived for me
Will the current 20% promotion apply Krisflyer miles are transferred to a Velocity account?
Hi Robert, unfortunately not. It’s for bank reward programs.
Do we know if I plan to cancel my card in January 2024, will I still get the bonus points if I make a transfer before closing the card? i.e. do I need to have a current participating card at the time of bonus points being paid out?
I also have this question. The article says “If you were planning to close a card mid-way through, the good news is that you can transfer from a different bank partner in subsequent months to maintain the 20% bonus.” This eems to suggest to me that it’s possible. I’ve configured my auto-transfer. Let’s gooo!
Been a while since a Citi transfer bonus? surely one due soon.
Any idea when will this deal be available next?
Hi Sam, these kinds of offers generally pop up every six months or so. And of course, when Velocity runs the next one, it’s something we’d cover at that time.
Looks like its back – 25% til Aug 15 from Amex (not sure if there’s a bonus for AscentPremium – would be nice)
Cheers for the heads up Andrew, confirmed on the Velocity website. No indication of an additional bonus for Ascent Premium.
Hi Matt.
Just got informed that it is only gold for 800K Amex points. They meant 800K velocity points!
Going to contest this false advertising.
I am a American Express Business Platinum Card holder. I transferred over 800k AMR points to get Platinum. The Velocity Points came through but I’m still waiting on the status. I called Velocity and AMEX and finally got a resolution. They said they will apply the Platinum status in 1 week. This is very slack.
On the phone to Velocity at the moment.
Transferred 800K Amex points and they only upgraded me to Gold!
Better come through with Platinum or I am going to insist for my points to be transferred back – false advertising!
no emails received… but I did a transfer from Fly Buys to Velocity… received both 15% and a separate 20% bonus! essentially 305 bonus Velocity points added to the 870 received from 2,000 FlyBuys. ~35% per 2,000 FlyBuys points transferred… sweet
Hi
Do you know if this applies to Platinum Corporate Amex?
Cheers
Ben
It’s best to log in to your account using this link to see if you are eligible.
I’m not a corporate member yet.
I am about to take the leap, but a friend says that these deals never apply to the corporate cards.
This would be a big influencing factor!
Regards
Ben
Your friend is right (that didn’t come to mind immediately, sorry). The terms and conditions of these transfer bonus offers usually exclude corporate cards.
My email said 15% flybuys to velocity.
I transferred and got 15%.
So you may have been offered 20% but that wasn’t for everyone.
Ah good to know. I’ve updated the article to show that it is targeted.
Curious that the email you got said a 20% bonus to transfer flybuys points. I also got an email today but it only refers to a 15% bonus until 25/2/20. Might wait to see what shows up on the website but if they’re targeting individual members with different bonus percentages nothing official may go up.
Ah good to know. I’ve updated the article to show that it is targeted.
Received the 20% offer, transferred but only received 15%.
Will contact them out principal
Hi, Do we know when the transfer bonus kick off in November last year? I am deciding whether to wait for a week or so more before I transfer or do it now! If its more likely to be early November i will probably hold my breath and wait..
You can’t transfer Velocity point to KrisFlyer? Or did I read it wrong
Yes, you can, you’ll lose 1/3 (just as you would the other way round), have done it myself given the rewards flights we wanted never made it through to Velocity. Lower points required on the route (from Istanbul) and piddling taxes made it worthwhile,
Hi Matt/Keith,
Thanks for the article. Do you think there is any chance they offer a bonus transfer from Amplify rewards? I have noticed Amplify (St George) is usually excluded from these velocity bonus transfer promotions. Not sure if I should hold out or just transfer now and close my cards. Would like any insight you have on this.
Hi Jason
Unfortunately we are not privy to which bank rewards programs will participate in Velocity’s bi-annual points transfer promotions. Some banks do seem to participate more often then others. CBA for example is one that hasn’t participated in over 2 years and are now back for this promotion.
I currently have approx 300K Membership Rewards Ascent points. With the impending devaluation of these points in April, this could possibly be the last chance available to transfer these to velocity and receive a bonus. While I have no impending need for the points in velocity, it is usually the ultimate destination of all of my points. So, my question is, take advantage of the current promotion and transfer the entire balance across, or hold off and hope for better (while possibly getting nothing else and having to transfer without any bonus to preserve the value of the points)?
Just looked at Amex participating cards and was surprised that the American Express Velocity Platinum Card is not part of the 15% promo!!!! Can someone confirm?
Hi Keith,
From the link you provided regarding citibank transfer, i can’t find anywhere mentioned the transfer bonus is 30%. Where did you find this info?
It’s at the bottom of this page.
Hi Keith,
Thank you for the report.
I logged into my citibank rewards and I can’t find any bonus points. is there a link that i can refer to? thanks
The bonus points will automatically post within 72 hours of the transfer.
Love your articles and my partner & I are just trying to work out the best way to utilise our points for return flights to London from Melbourne in August 2019. Would really appreciate your help in navigating the best way to do this. Currently we have:
105,889 Qantas Points Transferred from Qantas Amex Ultimate Card
28,580 Velocity Points with 13 Status Credits
8,989 Flybuys Points
What would you suggest the best way would be to maximise the saving and the points currently banked?
Looking forward to your reply.
Best to post this in our Questions section.
My understanding is there is a maximum amount you can transfer from Flybuys each year? I have 280k Flybuys points which I’m doing nothing with, would it be smart to transfer as many of these as I can to Velocity to maximise my transfer limit for this calendar year and in anticipation of transferring the maximum with bonus again next year?
Yes, that is correct:
That sounds like a really smart strategy on your part.
Thanks for the reply Keith. I am planning to use some points for a trip to NZ next Sept so not an urgent trade nope. Might just transfer the 70k or Amplify points as there doesn’t seem to be a frequent history of transfer offers.
Hi, still new at all this so just looking for some advise from those who have more experience.
I have been offered a flat 15% transfer bonus as i have been a Velocity member for less than 45 days. Looking to transfer points from Amplify & ANZ Rewards. Advise please on whether to take the bonus or is there a good chance of a better bonus?
Thanks
Andrew – 15% bonus usually crops up once or twice per year – May and November. However ANZ Rewards have sometimes been known to offer larger bonuses for larger amounts points transferred. Hard to make a recommendation on this one. If you need the points in Velocity soon then I’d suggest going for it, you might get better in future. Otherwise if this is just a speculative transfer then you could probably hold and earn more. A bit 50:50.
Hi,
Did anyone get the two single entry Virgin Lounge passes?
I transferred over 100,000 Velocity points from my AMEX card on 6th June and received the points plus bonus points but no sign of the 2 lounge passes.
I don’t understand how you can transfer 100,001 velocity points from flybuys when the annual maximum transfer is about 60,300 velocity points?
Good pickup! During the transfer period, you can exceed that cap. From the terms and conditions on the promotion page:
Does anyone have any idea if there is a maximum number of transfers during this period (for the bonus points to apply).
For example, I have two ANZ rewards accounts (business + personal) amongst flybuys where the transfers will attract bonus points.
Am I able to transfer from each of these (i.e. 3 transactions) and still receive the bonus points? On that note, if I transferred my points from the same account in two goes will both transfers receive the same bonus?
Cheers
Great, comprehensive article, thank you. I’m wondering whether to shift my 510,000 Amex Reward points to Velocity, and then to Kris Flyer, to add to my current points balance that are scheduled expire, as I plan a round-the-world next year. However, the maths tell me I’ll be losing about 20,000 points – but gaining Velocity platinum status for the coming year, and worse case, gold status for the year following (if I understand the offer correctly). Is Velocity platinum status worth having ?
I recall reading somewhere that Virgin have a soft landing for members who achieve a status tier but then don’t manage to maintain it after the first year.
Do you reckon the soft landing would apply to those who gain the status through the Amex 250 or 500k transfer bonus?
Thx Matt, but Citi is not mentioned in the affiliates that offer 20% and when you follow the link to the Citi page, it just takes you to the generic page and there is no reference ( that I can find) to any bonus points. I have emailed Citi….
I can’t find anything that confirms that you will get any bonus point from a Citi reward transfer
Citi is mentioned on the offer page. Check out the terms and conditions.
I can confirm that there is definitely no bonus when transferring from CBA Awards. Transferred points out yesterday and they have already shown up in Velocity today with no bonus.
However its still a better transfer for CBA Diamond and Platinum customers compared to FlyBuys even with their 20% bonus. Im guessing FlyBuys is more keen on you spending their points on Coles vouchers and keeping the money in house.
Thank you for sharing. Please let us know if any bonus points turn up within 72 hours—unlikely but small possibility.
Can someone please confirm I’ve done this correctly?!
a. Go to anzrewards.com (its not particularly user friendly as you probably know).
b. Go to Redeem Points > Frequent Flyer and Airmiles > VELOCITY TRANSFER from ANZ REWARDS CARD (EXP) – note that there’s no mentiopn of any bonus anywhere.
c. I need to move 400,000 ANZ rewards to receive 200,000 Velocity Points.
My questions:
1. Does the above amount include the bonus or is it applied once the points land in my account (https://www.velocityfrequentflyer.com/content/MyAccount/). Note there’s no mention of any bonus on Velocity either (https://www.velocityfrequentflyer.com/apps/velocity/minisite/credit_cards/index.html)
2. How much will the bonus be?
Thanks
Is Commonwealth Bank Awards included?
Has anyone with CBA Awards in the past had any luck in transferring the points over during this promotion period and actually received the bonus? Im sure I read someone who mentioned they did still get the bonus even though CBA wasnt listed.
We held off traveling in April because I saw this news and waited till May but with CBA not entitled, might have to try transferring from Flybuys. Can anyone confirm if the current Flybuys points transfer tool on their website is showing points with or without bonus? I have this feeling it is not but all the text and images around it seem to make you think it is??
I was hoping that Westpac would finally participate in one of these offers again.
Looks like ill be hoarding my altitude points for a little (maybe lot) longer
Would it worth it to couple this 20% bonus deal with the current discount on buying starpoints (35%) off)?
Correct my calculations if they are incorrect
Currently you can buy 20000 starpoints for $455 USD approx. $603.44 AUD
The 20% bonus is calculated on the base points being transferred I believe? 1:1
So 20000 x 20% + 5000 bonus transfer = 29000 velocity points
29000 velocity points for $603.44 depending on exchange rate equates to about 2c AUD a point?
Is this reasonable to buy speculatively or would American Airlines advantage points be more worth it for flights?
Your calculations look correct to me. We value Velocity points at 1.9 cents each, so I would say this doesn’t make sense to buy specutatively—only for a specific redemption you had in mind. AA miles are cheaper with the transfer bonus, so that seems a more attractive offer.
Hey Keith / Matt,
I see that Comm Bank doesn’t seem to be participating in these bonuses anymore… I have a lot of Comm Bank Points I want to transfer to get some type of bonus… Is there a way to do it via Hotel programs or any other cheeky way?
I read above that some Comm Bank card holders got lucky but was hoping to try and more proven way rather than risk missing out with a direct Comm bank to Velocity transfer… the difference between success and failure would be about 40k in Velocity Points.
Thanks for the help.
Unfortunately, CommBank Awards doesn’t have any hotel partners but good thinking! I would suggest considering transferring a small amount of points over early this month and seeing if a bonus posts within a week or so. If it does, then you could transfer some more.
I’d also recommend examining the CommBank Awards program more deeply and considering earning points with a more generous program like Amex.
Thanks Matt for the reply. I have tried a small amount of points to test if I get lucky with Comm Bank. I will also be getting rid of this card and finding a better one for Velocity. Thoughts on the best one for Velocity that takes part or receives the best bonuses? Apart from Amex, ANZ seem to always get special bonus offers? Cheers.
We aren’t authorised to give personalised credit card advice, however, you may find our guide to the highest Velocity point-earning credit cards useful. Also check out the offer history in the post above to see which partners tend to offer transfer bonuses.
The T&Cs seem to indicate a bigger offer (Booster) for ANZ, Citibank, etc., but I can’t find any more info on it? It’s on the ANZ business rewards site, but not the normal ANZ rewards page. The T&Cs link goes to an offer (win a share of 5m points) which expired in 2017!
“Velocity members must transfer their ANZ Reward Points between 1 May to 31 May (Promotion Period) to receive the ANZ 30% Booster Offer Points in addition to the 20% bonus Velocity Points. The ANZ 30% Booster Offer will be calculated as the percentage of the base number of Velocity Points you will receive when you convert your ANZ Reward Points to Velocity Points during the Promotion Period, before any other bonuses are applied. View ANZ 30% Booster full terms and conditions.”
I was thinking the exact same thing. Couldn’t find anything within ANZ Rewards. They are probably a bit slow and will get a page up in a week.
Found it!
https://anzrewards.com/public/info.aspx?name=velocity_may_2018
I’ve PDF’d that page, and send a test couple of thousand to Velocity, but that seems like what I’ve been waiting for. This seems the perfect opportunity to clear out my ANZ Rewards and Flybuys all in one hit!
H/T Australian Frequent Flyer
Does anyone know whether auto redemption from Westpac Altitude into velocity would trigger bonus points? So long as auto redemption occurs during the promo period?
Westpac isn’t officially included in this month’s promotion.
Hey Guys,
Did you notice the ANZ boosted offer in the T&C’s of 30% & 20% for ANZ rewards & Business rewards? The wording seems to imply that this bonus applies over & above the flat 20% offered by velocity, strange there’s no other mention of it in the main part of the promo information.
Agreed! Have updated the article to reflect this.
Haha, I like the tone of the spokesman, ‘never before’, ‘record breaking’,
Lets hope the hype they are building around it is real.
Any guessess folks? I am thinking may be a 50% transfer bonus and some status credits to boot.
Really hoping commbank are officially included this time!!!
Just the Virgin bonus 30% apply to the transfer of Altitude Rewards points to Velocity as well?
Tks KB
Velocity is being a bit sneaky in their language here—there is no bonus on transfers; it’s just a discount on redemptions. So you can transfer however many points you want across (do so by 24 February to make sure they arrive in time) and then, no matter where your points have come from, you can get 30% off redemptions. Hope that clears it up.
Booked for our family of 5, 3 adult 2 kids, flying to Sydney to Perth for Xmas. Cost 124,000 points plus $100.03! The same ticket would cost $9510 in cash, which is insane!
Great win!
Of course there will be no 30% discount for the LA flight leaving TOMORROW as it it outside the promotional period of 15/03/18 to 09/01/19…all awards are discounted. You’d better change the article
Does anyone know if a Reward booking (points and pay) earns the all-hallowed accrual of STATUS CREDITS?
I will be 170 SC off “keeping Gold” by June 2018. Thought the cheapest way to get over line is reward discount Business. 🙂
Or, should I just go down to Silver, & try to make the NEXT year a bigger one?
Thanks.
(I couldn’t find this info anywhere on Virgin’s website).

I love flybuys, although the ongoing uncertainty regarding its partnership with Etihad has taken some sheen off the program. Hope they can bring it back soon.
Matt, are you aware of any past offers where the bonus for Flybuys to Velcoity transfer was greater than 15%
15% is really the only transfer bonus that we’ve seen from flybuys to Velocity (one time it was 10%). You can see the trends in Offer History.
Just today I received a ‘targeted’ email from Velocity offering 18% bonus for transfer to Velocity. The offer is valid to 14th Feb 2018 (although it had started on 1st Feb 2018, or 6 days before I received the email). The special offer is made up of the current 15% bonus available to all, and 3% available to targeted email recipients. I don’t know what makes me eligible for this special offer – maybe because I never converted flybuys points to Velocity, or maybe because I am Velocity Gold, I don’t know, it doesn’t say why they have chosen me. Extra 3% was a good enough incentive for me to convert the maximum annual quota of 138000 flybuys points and as I write this article, Velocity points are already showing in my account, that’s less than 12 hrs after I triggered the transfer. The bonus points are awarded as follows – 15% immediately on transfer, and the extra 3% up to 4 weeks after the expiry of promotion. If curious why I went ahead with this transfer – whilst 3% extra bonus was admittedly a tipping point, I am also fed up with the Etihad Guest ongoing problems with their website. After the well publicised spell of log-in problems and ‘en masse’ conversion of log-in passwords, their system is plating up again, declaring my Etihad Guest password, which was forcibly made to be changed a few months ago and accepted by them, now declared too weak and made to be changed again – although unsuccessfully, which means I no longer know which of the several new passwords I tried is now registered with them, but none gets me into my Etihad Guest account. So, I decided I am done with Etihad and will never again transfer flubuys points into Etihad Guest account again. To make sure I stick to my own promise, I redeemed the remaining Etihad Guest miles on the future trip, which leaves me at close to zero balance, and ready to close off the Etihad Guest forever. I have had a hate-hate relationship with them for the past 6 years, and fancy the modest 3% extra flybuys bonus for transfer to Velocity tipping me over the edge! It sure must have been a terrible relationship I had with Etihad, and like with all bad relationships, one hopes the partner will change, but they never do. From now on, all my flybuys points will be going to Velocity, bonus or no bonus offers for transfers.
Thanks for sharing your experience. Glad you got an extra, targeted bonus. Yes, Etihad has had a number of problems with its IT system ‘upgrade’, so I can appreciate your frustration with the program.
I realise this promotion is over, but I’m curious – the article refers to AMEX Rewards programs being eligible for the bonus transfer – does this include AMEX Gateways rewards? (ie, with the AMEX Explorer cards)
Yes, both the Gateway and Ascent variants of American Express Membership Rewards are eligible for these promotions. Read more here.
I use my points for shopping rather than flight upgrades (mainly because flights are a tax deduction but point spending isnt).
And generally I transfer to DJs because they do price beat guarantees.
Can someone please check my math!
I have 800K ANZ Rewards. Usually 1 Velocity is worth 2 ANZ. If I transfer to Velocity before 10 Dec I get a 30% bonus, so 520K Velocity points.
520K Velocity points can get me $3,398.69 value of David Jones gift cards ($1000 DJs card currently costs 153K Velocity Points (there’s a 15% discount til 15 Dec).
If I keep my ANZ Rewards in ANZ I can get $3,599.96 value of DJs gift cards ($1000 currently costs 222,225 ANZ Rewards).
Unless I am wrong the only reason to transfer to Velocity is to spend the points on Virgin fights/upgrades etc?
520K Velocity points will be about 385k Krisflyer Miles [If you cannot do a transfer to Krisflyer directly, which would be preferable if you can]
Enough for 1 Round trip First Class from Australia to Europe [Valued at Approx $15K]
[Almost] enough for 2 Round trips Business Class from Australia to Europe [Valued at Approx $20-25k]
Compared to DJ’s gift cards.
Hope this helps!
Transferred 350k nab rewards last month with 15% bonus. Is there any way get this additional bonus?
That’s frustrating for you. The additional bonus is only for transfers made between 1 and 10 December 2017.
There must be a lot of really annoyed loyal Velocity members out there, myself included, that made sure they transferred their hard earned points by the deadline Nov 30 to qualify for the 15% bonus only to find out the very next day Velocity announce an even better offer ! From 1st to 10th Dec up to 30% bonus on all card transfers.
Flybuys is included on the 15% promo – from their website:
Boost your Velocity Points balance!
You still have time before Christmas arrives! Transfer your flybuys points to Velocity and receive 15% BONUS Velocity Points when you transfer before 10 December 2017.*
Updated!
Fyi I transferred CBA points on 29th November 2017 and no bonus points were forthcoming 🙁
Good to know. Thank you.
Update: 15% bonus was applied 6th December, a week after transfer!
What a nice surprise! Thanks for updating us.
processed mine on the 5th and haven’t seen any bonus. hoping to get lucky like above poster, but had to transfer to then transfer to SQ to confirm a WL F so it was just going to be a pleasant surprise.
CBA was not on the list of eligible banks this time. However I had decided to close my Diamond Award card at the end of November, so thought to transfer my remaining points to velocity and surprisingly was credited 15% bonus. Not sure if it was a mistake or they did it on purpose, but a was a sweet surprise
Does anyone have a good suggestion for a process they go through to see whether it’s worth transferring FlyBuys/CreditCard points to Virgin for deals like this?
TRANSFER
1. See how many points you can get using the credit card rewards program transfer wizard (e.g. 104,000 CC points = 41,600 + 15% = 47,840 velocity points)
COMPARE GIFT CARD EXCHANGE RATE
2. See what gift cards are worth in credit card portal: 104,000 CC points = $500
3. See what gift cards are worth in velocity so 47,840 velocity points = ($250/45,000)*47840=$265.78
COMPARE FLIGHT EXCHANGE RATE
4. Find a baseline flight value e.g. BNE-SYD on 6 March = $99 flights via VA
5. Velocity points = 11,800 velocity points
6. CC points (via Citi Thankyou Rewards travel portal) = 17,044 points
Value of Citi Thankyou Rewards point:
– Pre-exchange Gift Card = $500/104000 = 0.48c per initial CC point
– Pre-exchange Flight Redemption = $99/17044 = 0.58c per initial CC point (which for 104000 would require $604 gift cards to break even… this one is winning)
– Post-exchange Gift Card = $265.78/104000 = 0.26c per initial CC point
– Post-exchange Flight Redemption = (($99/11800)*47840)/104000 = 0.38c per initial CC point
So I’d be better off booking this flight through the CC rewards portal??
Any thoughts on figuring out when it would make sense? Is it more of a flight by flight comparison??
I’d need to do this same thing for Flybuys too
Hi, Matt
Is this promotion mention about the duration of processing period for the Velocity tier showing in your account after the points transaction?
If I have understood your question correctly, it can take up to four weeks after the end of the promotional period (30 November 2017) for the adjustment in Velocity status to occur.
Matt, if there any chance of posting a link to the information on Gold / Platinum status upgrade and extra bonus points for American Express Platinum?
I can’t find reference to such on the Expo pages on the VA website.
That’s far too many points to transfer without sighting an original of the offer and having a copy at hand to ensure compliance by VA !
Thanks!
I agree, that’s a lot of points to transfer! As far as I know, there is no landing page for this offer.
Keith received this offer via email as he is a Platinum Charge cardholder, and it has also been covered by AusBT and OzBargain, plus the terms and conditions in the email state nothing about it being a targeted offer to only some Plat Charge cardholders, so I’m almost 100% positive this is open to all.
However, you may want to give Velocity and/or Amex a call before you transfer to make sure you are eligible.
Hi Matt, you mentioned that this promotion is only for those who have access to American Express Ascent points – that means Platinum Charge, Business Platinum and Centurion cardholders.
But doesn’t the Platinum Edge earn Ascent points? Just clarifying that you meant Ascent VS Ascent Premium instead?
Pardon me – typo! Platinum Edge earns Ascent points, not Gateway points. Have updated the article to clarify it is only those three cards earning Ascent Premium points that are eligible for the elite status promotion.
I thought Amex Plat Edge earned Ascent, whereas Amex Plat Charge earns Ascent Premium?
Pardon me – typo! Platinum Edge earns Ascent points, not Gateway points.
Little puzzled by the comment that Platinum Edge card earns gateway points.. I looked at the Amex website and it says the Edge earns Ascent as well? Could you please clarify? Thanks!
Pardon me – typo! Platinum Edge earns Ascent points, not Gateway points.
I am with Commonwealth Bank, Do you know why it’s not listed? and you mention that I could still transfer now and get the deal, but I don’t see anything written anywhere? I have a heap of points that I have been waiting to transfer for a while now.
CommBank is not a partner for this transfer – not sure why not.
As for the elite status promotion, you have to have an Amex Platinum Charge, Business Platinum Charge or Centurion Card, which are all issued directly by Amex, not any bank.
Hi Matt
I transferred my NAB rewards points on the 22nd of June 2017.
To get the 15% bank transfer bonus offer but velocity told me I wont get the bonus points because the offer was only for May 2017.
Have you got the anything from you above article showing the offer after May 2017?
Where can I find the promotion on the velocity site. Could someone please send a link? Than you
Is it worth taking this promotion for points transfer to Thai Airways from the Velocity?
Hi Keith,
Has anyone gotten the full bonus 6000 points ? looks like only got 5000 bonus points.
Transfer from SPG came in as 25000 base , 20% promo 5000 points, SPG 5000 Bonus for transferring 25K, no 20% bonus on this . Full total of 35000 points … worth trying to put in a missing claim for the 1000? or will be knocked back as only the 20% bonus on the base ?
You should get the extra 1,000 but as per the offer terms and conditions it may take up to six weeks to reflect in your balance. After that, I’d recommend following up with Velocity.
Matt, velocity got back to me and advised there is no 20% bonus on the 5,000 point starwood bonus from the 25K transfer. as can’t have a bonus on a bonus, even though it shows up base points on the activity statement.
This is great to know! Thank you for updating us. I’ve updated the guide so that anyone looking back at this has the accurate information.
If you’re just short of the redemption, then you can check out our Velocity bonus offers guide, transfer flybuys to Velocity, or buy a minimum of 500 Starpoints but note that non-elite SPG members have to transfer at least 2,500 Starpoints to frequent flyer programs.
In the interests of accuracy, this promo is for one billion BONUS points. That would mean transferring the equivalent of 15 billion Velocity points. I’ve confirmed this with both Velocity and Westpac Altitude today. I suspect they won’t hit the cap – that is is for headline-grabbing marketing purposes. I could be wrong though.
Interestingly, the Altitude guy reckoned the promo would apply for auto-sweeps in JUNE also, i.e. not just at my May statement date but also my June statement date. I think he is getting confused with the T&C’s that cover someone who opts in prior to 31 May but whose next statement date is 1 Jun, for example. That is, everyone is covered for 1 month, no matter whether their next statement date is May or June. Anyone care to check my reasoning?
Hey Rod, Does that mean you also confirmed that Westpac Altitude points transfer to Velocity will gain the bonus?
Keith,
Great work for keeping us on top of this. I note with interest that Velocity are giving away a BILLION points in conjunction with this transfer offer. Is it any wonder that reward seats are getting more expensive and more scarce.
Amex platinum have an extra 25%
Transfer bonus from Amex Platinum Charge & Amex Centurion is 25%, other Amex cards is the standard 15%.
American Express Ascent Premium receive a 25% bonus.
Keith
Can we expect this offer again in May? I have a stash of ANZ Rewards points that will need to be moved as I am going to cancel the card before the next annual fee is due. I understand that I have 90 days to transfer the points after account closure, but even so they will need to be moved before Nov / Dec 2017.
Thanks
I’d say it’s likely!
Have been targeted today 2Dec via FlyBuys
So just wondering when the comparison for virgin or Etihad flight redemptions using flybuys will be happening?
Ah.. Am I missing something here? The transfer rate is 1 Velocity point for every 2 Commbank points (assuming AMEX Diamond). But, according to http://www.creditcardfinder.com.au/reward-program-point-currency-comparison they are of similar value.
So, you would be trading away 50% of your points to get 15% back?
Hey Ben – not quite following your question, sorry. CBA is 2:1 to Velocity, yes. Then add on 15% on top of the transferred amount of Velocity points during this promo. I think that table is confusing because they are looking at points required for a one way flight, not the transfer rate.
Email received on 1-Nov-2016. Amex platinum has a 15% bonus on points transfers;
“As a Platinum Card Member, you’ll receive 30% bonus Velocity Points when you transfer 2,000 or more Membership Rewards points to your Velocity Frequent Flyer account between 1 November and 30 November 2016.1
This means 1 Membership Rewards point is equivalent to 1.3 Velocity Points when you transfer your points during the month of November.
This special offer is an additional 15% on top of the publicly available bonus offer of 15% and is available to you as an American Express Platinum Card Member.”
ENJOY 30% BONUS VELOCITY POINTS
As a Centurion Member, you’ll receive 30% bonus Velocity Points when you transfer 2,000 or more Membership Rewards points to your Velocity Frequent Flyer account between 1 November and 30 November 2016.1
This means 1 Membership Rewards point is equivalent to 1.3 Velocity Points when you transfer your points during the month of November.
This special offer is an additional 15% on top of the publicly available bonus offer of 15% and is available to you as an American Express Centurion Member.
Thanks for the heads up!
I see amex platinum charge also have bonus 15 on top of the 15 from velocity
Thanks for the heads up!
When I called Amex today, they told me they’re still doing the 10% bonus on top so effectively a 25% bonus on Velocity points 🙂
Yes, this is a great offer for Plat Charge cardholders!
Why is there so many old comments here?
I wonder if they will ever be a flybuys to velocity bonus offer again
Hi John, since Flybuys permanently increased the transfer rate to 2:1 (effectively what it would have been after a transfer bonus), I don’t think we’ll see another Flybuys-Velocity offer anytime soon. Happy to be proven wrong though!
I just got an email from AMEX and it stated that MR transfer bonus to velocity is extended for another week (until 7 June). I’m not sure if it’s targeted l.
Thanks for the heads up! I didn’t get the email but AFAIK this is available to everyone. Will update.
Thanks Keith. Bit of a case of wishful thinking on my part since I am bailing out on CBA. Thought they could give me a little parting gift …
I just noticed Michael Kao say he transferred CBA points, but CBA are not listed in the offer, and I don’t see the offer in my CBA netbank awards section?? Can someone advise?
This is because his comment would be from an older promotion. I often update and republish content which includes comments carrying over. In most cases that’s helpful, but in this case, not so much. Sorry about that!
Hi Keith,
I have around 175k of Amex reward points from the platinum charge. Do you think its worth transferring to velocity even though i have no immediate travel plans?
Not unless you know you want to use them with Velocity in the long run, and can handle holding them there until that time (they are unlikely to devalue their award charts further, but you never know).
Velocity is not the only points transfer partner of CommBank.
They also allow transfers to Qantas FF.
Comm bank wasn’t in the list! 🙁
Ah, now noted. Thanks!
This deal is back!
Hi all,
I’m a bit late to the party with the point hacks business and have started reading your guides but I’d just like some advise on whether to take advantage of this bonus transferring from CommBank Diamond Awards or using the points at Flight Centre? I have a wedding to attend in Bali next June and would likely travel on to another SE Asian country from there.
Thank you in advance,
Tobias
Hey Tobias – you’ll be able to get more value out of transferring them to Velocity I think, but only if Virgin have Reward Saver availability for your dates when it comes to using points. Take a look into both options in a bit more detail and see what comes up in terms of cost, also consider how many you points you have vs how you many you need.
Hi
If I transfer my ANZ rewards points to Velocity and pick up the 15% bonus can they sit there as long as there is activity on my account or do they expire after a certain period.
Velocity points will expire after 36 months of account inactivity. Otherwise they will be alive indefinitely.
Keith – Citi rewards have effectively reduced the redemption rate on SIA/VA from Citi rewards to 1:2 from 2:3 making it inline with Signature. The only benefit for Prestige cardholders is the additional benefits (PP, Hotel Stays and 2 Limo transfers) making it not as much attractive, if paying the full annual fee.
Yes, it’s pretty appalling. More on those Citi changes here.
Seems Amex has been consistently part of the transfer program every time.
Yep, good win for Membership Rewards cardholders.
So can you initiate the transfer before midnight 30 November, or does the transfer need to be complete by midnight 30 November?
My reading of the terms was that it was transfers initiated by Nov 30.
Hi Kieth,
Are Citibank normally excluded from this offer?
I have about 260,000 Citi rewards points.
Thanks
Ray
Citi aren’t usually excluded, no. But there often does seem to be one bank or another not included, last time around it was Altitude Rewards.
Thanks Keith. So If I’ve got no immediate needs to book flights, I’d be better off waiting till the next round and hope Citibank are included?
Yep, there’s nothing gained by doing it now – only lost (loss of flexibility in your Citi points as you won’t be able to transfer them anywhere else).
Hey Keith,
I’m only 5 status points away from hitting gold after I take my flight to Sydney (from Adelaide) but that will bump up to 30 points a month after that and I might not be taking another flight before then. Just wondering if you know any other way to get status points apart from flying. It doesn’t seem like you can – even with a credit card or hotel deal.
Any feedback would be much appreciated! Thank you, James
Sorry for the delay! Sometimes there are some rare status credit deals that come with Virgin Money cards – but one of these promos just ended, so I think you’re stuck with taking a flight to get the credits. If you’re only one flight from Gold, it would be well worth doing it.
Just ring the Velocity contact centre. I was that close last year, they said if you are only a few points off (sort of indicated up to 15) they would extend the time or if you were renewing they would allow. Worth a try. I ended up going to NZ and got over the line with Air NZ velocity points
Hi Keith,
In response to you saying that you didn’t have to pay any additional points after the promotional period ended, I noticed this clause at the bottom of the email.
“Changes to discounted Reward Seat bookings made outside of the promotional period (1 May – 30 June 2015) may result in a loss of the 15% discount and an additional collection of Points may be required.”
I guess you got lucky!
Hey Wayne – great catch, must be a new term. Will update the post.
I just transferred all my CBA points plus booked a business seat to LAX for 79990 miles + $135 in fees. Bargain!
For those interested, Etihad’s A380 apartment to JFK is wide open at the moment. So we can fly SYD-AUH-JFK, 28 hours of ultra luxury for only 187.5k miles (unfortunately you can’t get 15% discount for EY flights). But consider AA would charge 150k for the same route, it is good deal, especially factor in the 15% bonus.
Great tip, thanks Michael! Enjoy the trip to LA : )
Hi Keith any insight into whether a transfer bonus will be offered anytime soon for the other airline partners is sing air, Malaysian?
Bonuses are rarely offered by other programs, so don’t hold your breath!
Hey .. can you post some good options to book an award tkt please!
The best option is to a destination you want to go to…
Thanks Keith! Any destination from Mel .. other than Sydney / Hobart! can we book one for say Aug or Dec time?
Well, hardest Velocity seats to get are to the US in Business. Outside of that, availability is generally good, and it’s literally about where you want to go and how many points you have, rather than where there is space.
