One of the main benefits of the InterContinental Ambassador program is the complimentary room upgrade when staying at IC hotels. However, you have to be well informed to make best use of it.
It is always confusing to figure out what upgrades you are entitled to with your Ambassador program membership. Different locations have different upgrade policies, and one location might give you Club access while others might give you a full upgrade to another room category, plus a few bells and whistles.
We’ve contacted some of the InterContinental hotels in the region for their policies and worked up a table of room types and amenities on offer with Ambassador membership.
These and their contact details will hopefully help anyone with membership make the most of it. If in doubt, always ask the reservations team for exactly what you’re after – they will generally be able to help out.

Most responded within a day or two and were very helpful. Only Hong Kong Intercontinental Spa did not respond so far but I will update the table as soon as I hear back.
If you have any other experiences of Ambassador membership to share, please add them in the comments and we’ll update the details in the post.
Hope this helps in your quest for the best room at the lowest possible cost. If you know of any incorrect info, or the details change, please leave a comment and I’ll update the table.

Has anyone been to Intercontinental Perth City Center? We’re considering purchasing Ambassador for our upcoming stay later this year. Is it worth purchasing the kit? Tried emailing them, but no response.
Intercontinental Shenzhen , 2017 Aug.
Seem to be upgraded with lounge access. Room wasn’t suite.
Does anyone know what upgrades apply at IC Yokohama, Japan?
Is there a minimum room to book to receive a club upgrade?
Thanks
Just my perspective on Ambassador upgrades – it appears the ‘no club upgrades’ from non-club bookings is across the board. Also a Junior suite at Melbourne Rialto provides a great value upgrade to a signature suite in my experience. One question though – anyone know what upgrade is available if you book a twin room? Particularly looking at Melbourne
Great post!! Thanks. Do you know about policies for the Hong Kong Intercontinental?
IHG Sydney is no longer giving wine as part of the AMB programme.
As to upgrades to club, this has been stopped throughout the programme, due to a somewhat ambiguous interpretation of the wording by the hotels. I think the wording is supposed to stop AMB holders gaining access to lounge without an upgrade, or AMB holders flashing their card and expecting unilateral entrance to lounges. To stop upgrades to club, I think is poor.
Not true I have just booked a duplex and was upgraded to club
Also I am noticing the exchange rate to US$ is not the official rate, well certainly not from Australian dollars.
Just think the only benefit as a platinum Amb is late check out !
I stayed at the Intercontinental SAN Fransisco in April, apart from the room upgrade, I got a small fruit basket and a bottle of water.
I’ve just been told by the IC Bali that as of September 2016 no access to the Clubrooms/lounge/facilities will be given as a consequence of AMB upgrades. This is due to a change in IC-wide policy apparently.
Shame. Thanks for letting us know, we’ll update the guide.
Hi Keith.
Intercontinental Wellington told me recently there will no longer be upgrades that give Club access from non Club Class rooms. As Ian mentioned above this covers both New Zealand and Australia.
Thanks for the heads up Brent.
Hi Keith
Just stayed at the Intercontinental Sydney and received free club by booking a suite, which I have done many times previously but was told this is not going to happen anymore. They will just give an additional discount off your room.
Ian
Hi, we have a King Junior Suite booked for the Intercontinental in Melbourne for 3 nights. What kind of upgrade can we possibly be looking at?
Regards
Phil
Usually checking with the hotel directly is the best way – they have defined policies for Ambassador upgrades, so check with them and see what they say.
Any idea on policies of IC SYD Double Bay? Or if any of these hotels have changed their policies..
I’m Hilton and Hyatt Diamond but heavily considering signing up for IC Ambassador.
Added details for Sydney Double Bay after reaching out to them. We haven’t rechecked past policies but in our experience these don’t change frequently.
I have just had an experience with David Intercontinental in Tel Aviv. I booked with ambassador club direct to guarantee the room upgrade with lounge access and on arrival they upgraded the room but did not grant lounge access. I have emailed IHG ambassador club to ask them their policy as there is no disclaimer on the website. Awaiting reply.
Any feedback from IC Hong Kong yet?
Have you had any experience with the free night from the IHG dining rewards program? Specifically, I’m interest to know if you can use your free night to pay for the ‘buy one’ you get with your BOGOF ambassador membership.
How about the IC Bangkok and Jakarta?
We’ll research and take a look!
Hi Dave,
We have updated the table to include the IC Jakarta’s response. We’re not able to include the IC Bangkok since we couldn’t get details from them by email without referencing an existing booking.
