Velocity Frequent Flyer is expanding its roster of international airline partners with the launch of a deeper partnership with Air Canada Aeroplan. Members will soon be able to redeem their hard-earned points on Virgin Australia flights and vice versa, starting from 19 Jan 2021.

It’s a great win for Velocity Frequent Flyer members, who can look forward to splashing their points on Air Canada’s non-stop flights from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne to Vancouver and back.

As it currently stands, Gold and Platinum Velocity members will not receive reciprocal priority perks such as access to the Maple Leaf lounges when travelling on Air Canada flights. However, this may be a temporary restriction due to depressed travel demand arising from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Earning Velocity Points for Air Canada flights

The new partnership will allow Velocity members to earn Velocity Points between Australia and Canada, and other destinations in the Air Canada network.

Velocity Points will be earned when flying on Air Canada marketed and operated flights. This means that you must be flying on an Air Canada plane and have an Air Canada flight number (starting with AC) on your boarding pass.

How many points will I earn?

The number of Velocity Points members will earn with Air Canada is based on the fare class and the number of miles travelled. Therefore, the higher your fare type, the more Points members will earn.

Velocity has a Mileage calculator that can help determine the number of miles flown. Velocity members can then refer to the tables below to determine the number of points earned.

  • Codeshare flights (any flight with an AC flight number that is operated by an airline other than Air Canada or Virgin Australia)
  • Upgraded fares: Members travelling on upgraded fares that were purchased with Points or by bidding for an upgrade will earn as per the rules of the original fare class purchased.

How many Status Credits will I earn?

Velocity members can earn Status Credits when members travel in an eligible fare class on Air Canada operated flights. The Status Credits earned will again depend on the destination and fare purchased.

Members can calculate the number of Status Credits earned by using the above Mileage Calculator to determine the number of miles flown. Members can then refer to the tables below with your chosen Fare Type.

Using Velocity Points for Air Canada flights

At the time of writing, Velocity Frequent Flyer hasn’t released details on how the partnership will work in reverse, so we don’t know how many Velocity Points it will take to fly on Air Canada services.

It all boils down to whether Air Canada will be included on the more-favourable Table 1 of its reward charts, or the more expensive Table 2 where most partner airlines sit.

For Air Canada’s own direct flights from Vancouver to Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, you’d be looking at either 44,800 pts or 56,000 pts in Economy, and 95,500 pts or 104,000 pts in Business Class.

Earning Aeroplan Points for Virgin Australia flights

From 19 January 2021, Air Canada Aeroplan members can earn Aeroplan Points when flying on any Virgin Australia flight. In addition, Aeroplan members can earn Status Qualifying Miles (SQMs) and Status Qualifying Segments (SQSs), as well as Status Qualifying Dollars (SQDs) for Virgin Australia domestic flights ticketed by Air Canada. The relevant earning details are shown in the table below.

Using Aeroplan Points for Virgin Australia flights

Air Canada Aeroplan members will be able to use Aeroplan Points to redeem for seats on all Virgin Australia flights.

While not so relevant for Australian readers, those with Aeroplan Points will enjoy decent redemption rates, starting from 8,000 points for a Sydney-Melbourne flight in Economy and 45,000 points for Perth-Sydney in Business Class

Perth to Sydney would need 25,000 points in Economy or 45,000 in Business.

Use the Aeroplan Points Predictor to see how many points are needed for Virgin Australia routes, or download the Flight Reward Chart [PDF] for more detailed information.

Summing up

This newly-expanded partnership is a great step forward for both airline programs. Velocity Frequent Flyer’s weakness traditionally has been its lack of international partners, so adding Air Canada will be a great help indeed.

Although the two airlines previously had a codeshare partnership, this new reciprocal arrangement means members of both frequent flyer programs will be able to use their points on a wider range of flights, though it’ll have to be after international borders open.
