Earning Velocity points with your car rental bookings

By booking with Velocity partners, Hertz, Thrifty, or Europcar, you can bump up your Velocity balance when renting.

Each of these partners used to offer the same points earn rate for Velocity Red members for rentals in Australia and New Zealand – 3 points per $1 AUD spent – but Europcar have recently increased their earn rate to 4 points per $1 AUD.

Points earned are based on the core cost of the rental car, so members will not earn points on additional costs such as:

  • Damage liability cover
  • Optional insurance
  • Vehicle registration fees
  • Premium location fees
  • Other admin fees, taxes, GST, one way fees, age surcharges, and additional driver fees
  • Equipment such ski racks, baby/booster seats or GPS rental costs.

For international bookings, a flat earn rate of 800 points applies to all rentals.

What do I need to do to earn Velocity points with my car rental?

Put simply, one or both of two things:

  1. Ensure your frequent program and number is input at the time you book, or by amending your existing booking online or over the phone
  2. By adding your frequent flyer program and number to your booking at the point of car collection.

There are some differences in how each company processes the points earned:

Europcar – Velocity members earn points on the first 30 days of an eligible Europcar rental. If a member rents multiple vehicles at the same time, points will only be earned on the rental of the vehicle returned first. Rentals are subject to Terms and Conditions.

Hertz – It takes around 30 business days for Velocity Points to be credited to your account from date of hire. Points are earned on Hertz passenger vehicles, commercial, 4WD and minibuses.

Thrifty – It takes about 30 business days for Velocity Points to be credited to the Velocity member’s account from date of hire. Members will earn Points on Thrifty passenger and luxury vehicles, commercial, 4WD and minibuses.

Leveraging Velocity status for increased points earn

As a Silver, Gold, or Platinum Velocity member you can also earn bonus points in addition to your base points on an Australian domestic rental.

For both Hertz and Thrifty, Silver members can earn 50% bonus points, Gold members earn 75% bonus points, and Platinum members earn 100% bonus points on top of the 3 points per $ spent.

For Europcar, on top of the 4 points per $ spent, Silver members earn 12.5% bonus points, Gold members earn about 30% bonus points, and Platinum members earn 50% bonus points. The lower percentage is due to the higher base points earn rate, the actual points earn for higher tier members are in fact the same across all three partners.

Redeeming Velocity points for car rentals

Redeeming your points for car rental is also an added bonus which can be done through Europcar via Car Trawler.

You must hold a minimum balance of 4,000 points and redemption is only available in Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain, France, Italy, Portugal, Germany, Spain, Belgium, Austria and Switzerland, and is subject to availability at the time of booking.

The number of points required will vary from time to time, depending on type of car, date of travel and time of booking. It is also worth noting that you do not necessarily need to use your points to cover the full amount, you can cover part of the cost with points and pay the remaining balance, if that works better for you.

This is generally not going to be a great value use of your Velocity points compared to using them for flights, especially if you redeem for Premium Economy or Business Class.

Special car rental offers for Velocity members

Each of the preferred partners offer a number of deals for rentals. Before choosing a rental company, it may be a good idea to check these and see what’s on offer here.

Summing up

Velocity’s car rental partners are numerous, and the points earn rates simple to understand.

This leaves little room for arbitrage to earn a ton of points (although cheap, one day international rentals earning 800 points is fairly good value), but is also consumer friendly.

The car rental status benefits for Velocity Gold and Platinum members are unique when compared with Qantas Frequent Flyer, and for the true frequent traveller add a fair bit of value from your frequent flyer status.
