Singapore Changi Airport is packed with excellent places to eat. From Jewel’s dizzying array of restaurant chains to the airport’s many food courts, you’re certainly not short on choice. But taking a quick break from points, for a moment, here’s one of the cooler ‘food hacks’ at the airport.
Tucked away inside Terminal 2 is a dining spot that most travellers never even realise exists. That’s by design – it’s the staff canteen, primarily welcoming airport workers. While it’s hidden away from the main passenger areas, members of the public are also welcome if they know where to look.
After an overnight stay at Changi Airport, I wandered over to the staff canteen early in the morning, in search of a great-value, hawker-style breakfast. I was not disappointed.

Finding the staff canteen in Changi Terminal 2
Reaching the staff canteen requires a little determination. From the Departures Hall on Level 2, go to the far left and exit through the glass sliding doors toward Carpark 2A. Take the lifts or stairs to Level 3, then go up one more level to Level 3M. You will see signs for the canteen in the car park.
Once inside, however, it feels just like any neighbourhood hawker centre, but without the searing heat. The décor is simple and functional. During my breakfast visit, the clientele is mainly airport staff, from cabin crew to ground handlers to office workers. But there is also a smattering of tourists like me.
The complex opens from 6:30am, though individual store timings will vary. The busiest period will be the lunch rush. You’ll find predominantly local hawker dishes, but there’s also coffee, smash burgers and more.
Given that I was in Singapore, my heart’s set on one dish. For breakfast, I order a plate of chicken rice from a Hong Kong-style roast meat shop. Complete with fragrant rice and tender chicken, the plate sets me back around S$6. It’s still great value for an airport meal.
Pair it with a kopi or teh, and you’ve got a satisfying breakfast that won’t break the budget.
Is it worth visiting the Changi Terminal 2 staff canteen?
If you’re on a tight schedule or aren’t feeling very adventurous (you will be away from air conditioning for part of the walk), then this probably isn’t worth the detour.
But for travellers arriving early, waiting on a long layover or simply curious about a different side of Changi Airport, the staff canteen offers a fun and authentic experience.
I’ve also visited the Orchis Food Court (the staff canteen in Terminal 1), but wasn’t as impressed with the space. It was also more difficult to find than the Terminal 2 canteen. So if you’ve got time to visit Terminal 2 and love local Singaporean food, why not try out this hidden gem?
