The best credit cards for online shopping in Australia earn Qantas Points, Velocity Points, or flexible rewards on every online purchase. From your weekly grocery delivery to international websites and subscription services, every dollar counts. After all, it’s one of the most consistent points-earning channels available to Australian points collectors.
According to Australia Post’s 2026 eCommerce Report, Australians spent $82.6 billion online in 2025, up 14% year on year, with 24% of all retail spend now made online. At that scale, the card you use for online purchases should be a major consideration in your points accumulation strategy.

Why online shopping is one of the best opportunities to accelerate your points earn
Most frequent flyers focus on how many points they earn per dollar at the grocery store or petrol station. While some savvy shoppers can make the most of ‘earn stacking’ through some retail partners, this opportunity is far easier to take advantage of with online shopping.
Earn stacking means earning points from two or more sources on a single purchase. When you buy through the Qantas Shopping online mall or the Velocity e-Store, and also pay with a points-earning credit card, you earn from both channels simultaneously. The card earns its standard rate. The shopping portal adds bonus points on top of that.

For an electronics purchase of $1,000, that combination can earn several thousand points, whereas a standard card transaction would earn only a few hundred. In some circumstances, you could also ‘triple stack’ with another participating offer, such as bonus points on a gift card for that retailer. We’ve got an example of that at the end of the guide.
But no matter what path you choose, the credit card is the foundation of the stack. It earns on every transaction regardless of where you shop. Selecting the right card for your online spending is the first step.
What to look for in a credit card for online purchases
Not all cards earn the same rate online as they do in-store. Some cards offer different earn rates on domestic online purchases, international online purchases, and in-store purchases.
A card that earns 0.5 Qantas Points per $1 on general spend might earn 1 Qantas Point per $1 on online transactions, because the online spend is categorised differently.

Check three things before you designate a card for online shopping.
- The earn rate on domestic and international online purchases vs. in-store purchases.
- Whether international online purchases from major retailers earn at the overseas spend rate or the standard domestic rate.
- Whether the card accepts the payment methods used by your most frequent online retailers.
Security features are also relevant for online shopping. Virtual card numbers, the ability to lock and unlock the card via an app, and strong fraud monitoring are all useful when the physical card never leaves your wallet.

How to stack your credit card earn with Qantas Shopping and Everyday Rewards portals
Stacking is the most underused tool in a frequent flyer’s points strategy. Here is how it works in practice, on a purchase of a new Apple device priced at $2,000.
- Buy Apple gift cards with a 20x points bonus at Woolworths or Coles. That’s 20,000 Qantas or Velocity Points once converted.
- Pay for the gift cards with your points-earning credit card. Using the Amex Qantas Ultimate as an example (1.25 pts per dollar), that’s 2,500 Qantas Points for the purchase.
- Load the gift cards onto your Apple account to convert them into account credit, then click through Qantas Shopping or the Velocity e-Store to make the purchase. Assuming a triple points promotion (3 points per dollar), that’s another 6,000 bonus Qantas points. Be sure to check the ‘Exclusions’ tab as recent-model devices may be excluded from this bonus for some time.
- In this example, your Apple purchase could net up to 28,500 bonus Qantas Points, at no extra cost compared to buying it in cash.

That’s the stacking opportunity most comparison guides don’t cover, because it requires knowing the frequent flyer ecosystem and not just the card market.

Online shopping security features worth knowing about
A card used primarily for online shopping benefits should have some key security features that you might not normally use for in-store purchases.
Virtual card numbers let you generate a one-use card number for online purchases, so your real card number is never exposed to the merchant. Some card issuers offer this through their apps. Occasionally, you can have the same card number, but with a rotating CVV.
Instant transaction notifications let you spot an unauthorised online transaction within seconds. Combine this with the ability to freeze the card in the app, and you have a quick way to protect your account from further unauthorised use. It’s also handy if you can’t find your card and need to look for it.
Zero liability on fraudulent transactions is standard across Visa, Mastercard, and American Express, but the speed with which disputed transactions are resolved varies by issuer. American Express has historically been noted for faster dispute resolution, which matters when a large online purchase is in question.
