Earning points with the Qantas American Express Premium card
One of the Qantas American Express Premium Card’s biggest benefits is the solid earn rate of 1 Qantas Point per dollar spent on most eligible spend including utility payments, insurance and telecommunications.
This is higher than most comparable Visa and Mastercards on the market, which typically earn up to 0.75 Qantas points per dollar instead.
The extra point per dollar with Qantas spend is a welcome addition for anyone who spends cash, not just points, with booking flights through Qantas. A $600 flight could earn you 1,200 Qantas Points just from the purchase itself (and you could get more points from the flight itself later).
The 0.5 Qantas Points per dollar reduced earn rate applies to government payments such as the ATO, Australia Post, and councils — this is common to most other American Express-issued cards. It’s still better than many other cards which don’t earn any points on government charges
Two Qantas Club Complimentary Lounge invitations after eligible Qantas spend each Card Member year
The Qantas Club Complimentary Invitations can be used at any domestic Qantas Club in Australia, or for international Qantas Business Class Lounges such as those in Sydney, Melbourne, Hong Kong, London and Singapore.
Domestic Qantas Clubs offers a decent range of beverages and light snacks.
When international travel opens up, these Qantas Club passes are best used in Hong Kong, Singapore or London. These well-designed lounges offer varying degrees of on-demand dining, bar service and good facilities.
Aim to use the lounge invitations where they will be most useful to you. If you can’t get overseas in the next year or so, then use them at domestic Qantas Lounges instead.
The Qantas American Express Premium Card issues digital lounge passes, usually valid for a year. These can be accessed via the Complimentary Invitations Portal once you have first spent with Qantas (e.g. booked a flight) using the card.
Complimentary Qantas Wine Premium membership
Worth $99 a year, premium membership to Qantas Wine gives you 3 Qantas Points per dollar spent as well as complimentary delivery within Australia (exclusions apply)*. This is on top of the Qantas Points earned when using a card like the Qantas American Express Premium Card.
Paying for Qantas Wine purchases with this Qantas-branded card will net you a total of 4 points per dollar spent on Qantas Wine products, which is the 3 points from Qantas Wine and 1 point from your card.
Qantas Wine often offers thousands of bonus points on bundles, which tend to credit to your account fairly quickly. This could be a good way to top-up your points balance while getting a case of wine on the side!
Qantas Wine Premium Membership and its benefits are subject to the Qantas Wine Terms and Conditions. To join or purchase from Qantas Wine, you must be a Qantas Frequent Flyer member aged 18 years or older and have an Australian delivery address (exclusions apply). Your premium membership will be valid for as long as you continue to hold your Qantas American Express Premium Card. Qantas Wine Premium Membership will be automatically applied within 2 weeks of Qantas Points being credited to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account from your first spend on your Qantas American Express Premium Card. You will receive email confirmation from Qantas about your Qantas Wine Premium Membership enrolment (excludes NT members). Liquor Act 2007: It is an offence to sell or supply to or to obtain liquor on behalf of a person under the age of 18 years. Licence Number: NSW LIQP770016736, SA 57900154, NT IRL0201. Qantas Wine is operated by Qantas Frequent Flyer Operations Pty Limited ABN 22 132 484 210.
American Express Plan It
American Express launched ‘Plan It’ in mid-2020, which allows cardholders to create instalment plans that allow for equal payments to be distributed over a 3, 6 or 12 month payment period. There is a monthly fixed fee to access this feature, with up to 10 Plan It plans with a minimum of $150 balance able to be created.
Bundled Travel Insurance and Card Purchase Cover
The American Express Qantas Premium Card also includes a range of insurances designed to offer you great peace of mind when you use your card. These have no additional cost, and include:
Card Purchase Cover: covering stolen or damaged items
Card Refund Cover: covering when a store refuses a return
Travel Insurance: includes Medical Expenses Expenses Cover, Trip Cancellation and Amendment Cover, Personal Baggage, Money and Travel Documents Cover and more
This guide references some of the benefits of insurance policies provided with this card. You should read the PDS and obtain independent professional advice before obtaining this product.
Mobile wallet integration
American Express Cards work with Apple Pay®, Google Wallet™ and Samsung Pay, meaning you can use this card on your smartphone for easier payments.
Read the Point Hacks guide to using Apple Pay or for using Google Wallet and Samsung Pay, including instructions on how to add your American Express card to those services.
With this feature set up, it means you could still use your NFC-enabled phone to make purchases with your American Express account, even if your physical card is lost or stolen and pending replacement.
Eligibility criteria for bonus points for existing American Express Card Members
American Express are quite specific about whether existing Card Members will be eligible for bonus points if they apply for a card, are approved, and meet the minimum spend criteria.
Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any Card product issued by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 18 month period are ineligible for this offer.
American Express don’t allow existing Card Members, even for different types of American Express cards (e.g. Charge, Credit or Business) to be eligible for bonus points offers for cards in a different family.
Summing up
The Qantas American Express Premium Card offers a high earning rate and generous inclusions, especially when compared to other cards that share a similar annual fee.
If we had to pick a downside of the Qantas American Express Premium Card, it would be that it doesn’t offer ‘category bonuses’ like the American Express Platinum Edge, which earns even more bonus points at the supermarket and fuel bowser.
However, the Qantas Lounge invites, which you will receive after making an eligible Qantas spend, and Qantas Wine Premium Membership are nice additions to have. Add to that the included Travel Insurance and Card Purchase Cover, other American Express-exclusive perks such as year-round discount offers — and you’ve got yourself an attractive card package.

What is the criteria for an American Express Black card?
The criteria to be invited for an American Express Centurion Card is also under wraps but generally involves having a high level of monthly spend on existing American Express cards.
What are the different levels of American Express cards?
Australian American Express cards come in various tiers, starting with zero annual fee cards with limited benefits, such as the Qantas Discovery Card. Next are Gold-level cards such as the Qantas Premium Card, then Platinum-level cards such as the Qantas Ultimate Card.

Is there a minimum spend with qantas for the lounge invitations and does this include Jetstar purchases?
Hi Matt, with this card, you’ll receive the lounge passes after your first Qantas spend. It doesn’t matter what the amount is. However, Jetstar purchases don’t count unless you book that flight via the Qantas website.
For the people that applied for this card recently (with the 90k QFF promo), how long has it taken for you to get the $249 statement credit? Also agree with Josh, the Shop Small promo seems like a bit strange – not sure how it works. Amex customer service were not helpful.
FYI, getting the shop small promo added to a new card is a PAIN. After speaking to one rep who flat out refused to look into it, the second said that it may take up to two weeks to have the offer available on the card. Probably shouldn’t be marketed as a benefit if it’s not available and I question if this is false advertising.
I currently have the Westpac Altitude Black bundle, which includes an AMEX card. I applied for this through Westpac and it came from the bank, however in the T&Cs I note it says this:
“American Express Westpac Altitude Cards are issued and administered by American Express Australia Limited ABN 92 108 952 085, Australian Credit Licence No. 291313…”
Can anyone confirm whether or not I’m eligible in this case? I’m leaning towards no, but would appreciate some advice!
Hi Mike, according to our guide for the Westpac Amex: For bonus points eligibility, this [the Westpac] card is considered to be a bank-issued card, so won’t affect your eligibility for bonus points on American Express-issued cards.
So tempted although upon checking with Amex Online chat, I’m still serving the 18 month exclusion until 8 November, please bring back offer before Xmas!
I don’t have Qantas FF membership but my husband does. He’s ineligible for this card so can I sign-up in my name and provide his FF details so he gets the points?
Hi Lauren, you will not be able to do that, as the FF details must match the cardholder details.
However, you could sign up for a Qantas Frequent Flyer membership for free with this guide and then apply for the card yourself. Once you earn the bonus points, you would be able to book flights for him or transfer points to him as a family member.
I just applied and was approved for the Qantas Discovery card the other day, and it’s now in the mail. I assume it would be too late to cancel that and apply for this card? Or does the “previously held card” clause only apply to cards that are activated?
hi there!
i’m a bit confused about The Qantas American Express Ultimate Card.
“Get rewarded with up to 2.5 Qantas Points per $1 spent. There’s no cap on the amount of Qantas Points you can earn, plus we’ll transfer your points straight to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account each month.
Earn 1.5 Qantas Points11 for every $1 spent on Card purchases, except spend at government bodies in Australia where you will earn 0.5 Qantas Points per $1 spent
Earn 1 additional Qantas Point per $1 spent on selected Qantas products and services in Australia
No cap on earn rate. You’ll receive up to 2.5 Qantas Points per $1 spent, no matter how much you spend each month.
Does it mean..if you spend $1 at Coles you get 2.5 Qantas Points? and if you spend $1 at Woolworths you also get 2.5 Qantas Points? Is there any difference of points (higher and lower) if you shop at Coles or Woolworths?
Hmmmm, it’s a bit confusing, right? For both the Amex Qantas Premium (this post) and Ultimate (different post), you’ll receive 1.5 Qantas Points per dollar spent at most places, including Coles and Woolworths (no difference between the two). The bonus 1 point is only for spend with Qantas, like on flights.
You wouldn’t be able to upgrade from Amex and pick up a bonus unless you are applying for a different card type – more on this here. If you want to upgrade anyway, then give Amex a call.
Hi, I have applied for this card and received it not long ago – because I like the idea of lounge invites.
But, I also happened to have booked a QF flight before I applied for this card, but I want to have an invite when I travel for this flight.
Am I able to get an invite when I spend on ANY Qantas products (Qantas online store) or do I have to have purchased a QF flight using the card to get the invite?
I haven’t got a firm answer on whether this works for Amex, but it has for other banks – try a small Qantas carbon offset purchase. Not sure about Qantas Online Store either.
Hi keith, to my knowledge DJ Amex Platinum earns 3 Qantas points per $1 for purch in supermarket & petrol station, while DJ Amex (with $99 Annual fee) earns 2.25 Qantas points per $1 .
Hey Patricia – thanks for the comment, unfortunately both the Platinum and Regular cards have the same earn rate for Supermarkets and Fuel. I wish were the Platinum were higher 🙂
You actually earn 0.5 points per $ with the ATO, so yes I believe this should be an eligible transaction. Not great value points earn with the ATO fee but if it helps you meet the minimum spend I guess it could work. Might be worth double checking with Amex to be sure.
Hi Keith,
Great work by the way, do the 80000 points get added to the already existing points on your qantas ff card? And what is the 1% establishment fee? And any other hidden fee’s?
Thanks heaps
Hey David – yes, you link your existing FF account to this card and the points will get added if you are approved and meet the bonus points eligibility criteria.
Fees are laid out pretty well on the Amex website, the establishment I believe is in relation to the balance transfer component if you take that up.
Hey Greg – if it’s issued by your company and you didn’t apply for it personally, and you don’t pay it off personally, it should not impact your eligibility for the bonus points.
Hi Keith! I’ve just got a few questions surrounding this card:
If i’m currently not a member of the Qantas Frequent Flyer program do I also have to sign up for this ($90 AU)?
Do the points earned stay in the QFF account even if I was to cancel the card after 1 year?
Is this correct, if I have an existing Amex card I can’t apply for this card? If this is the case it seems like an argument for card churn. So much for loyalty!
PS. I’ve had a basic Amex card forever……….just as back for emergency.
Hello Keith – I have a bank issued Amex (linked with a MasterCard). Do you know if that makes me ineligible for this card. My reading is that I would still qualify because the Amex I have hasn’t been issued by American Express. I would be interested in your thoughts on this. Thanks!
Hi Keith! Would someone with a ANZ Frequent Flyer Black card (Qantas 75,000 points) be eligible for the 80,000 points bonus with this card, as the ANZ amex is bank-issued and this one is amex-issued?
i’m a bit stuck as to which way to go with this one, so I’m putting it out there. I need to make a purchase of around $8,000 USD in accomodation between now and September, with $1,300 due when I book this month.
What’s the best way to make this purchase so as to meet the minimum spend criteria but not incur any hefty foreign currency exchange? Normally I’d use a QANTAS cash or something similar.
What’s annoying here is that this Gold card which has a $249 annual fee, provides better rewards for Supermarkets and Petrol than then Platinum card with a $1,200. Generally, I would have thought Platinum status would provide everything Gold does plus more. The way Amex have structured this doesn’t make sense.
Hey Kieth, scroll to the bottom of that page and look at the notes. I have copied it in here, I originally spoke with the ANZ black card concierge service when I ordered the lounge passes and they advised me that I could use them at LAX. I was rudely surprised when I couldn’t.
‘+ Jetstar refers to Jetstar (JQ), Jetstar Asia (3K) and Valuair (VF).
A oneworld marketed flight refers to a flight with a oneworld flight number, eg QF1 or AA222. A oneworld operated flight refers to the actual aircraft or ‘metal’ on which you fly, eg Finnair aircraft.
Note: Complimentary invitations cannot be used in the Los Angeles oneworld lounge.’
Hey, we tried to get into the ‘Qantas’ Business lounge in LAX with our Q Club invites and were turned away. It is not operated by Qantas but by One World and therefore they did not accept the complimentary invitation. I would be very careful in advocating something contrary to this as I just checked again and this is still the case at the One World lounge. This was very annoying for us as we wasted a lot of time getting across to the lounge whilst the rest of our flight created large queues at the paid for dining options. Status cards (Gold+ and Q Club Membership) are fully accepted, but not Q Club invitations.
To my knowledge, you have been turned away from that lounge incorrectly. Having seen the lounge invites that come with a range of cards (which should come with the same access rights, but one-time, as for Qantas Club members), from memory the terms are something like ‘access to Domestic Qantas Clubs, and Qantas International Business Class lounges’. I don’t have to hand to quote from.
From Qantas’ own website, the lounge is explicitly declared the “Los Angeles Tom Bradley – International Business Lounge” with access for Qantas Club members stated as ‘Qantas Club Member: Next onward flight that day must be a Qantas, or Jetstar Airlines+ flight number’.
If you have been turned away, I would be complaining to Qantas to see what they have to say.

How much is the minimum credit limit for the Qantas American Express Premium Card?
Don’t see this listed on the Amex website.
Hi with meeting minimum spend requirements, can I pay my utilities, bills etc. using this card to contribute?
Hi, for the Qantas Amex Platinum card offer (75k bonus points +$249 statement credit), is it eligible for Amex David Jones credit card holders? Thanks

Hi Mike, according to our guide for the Westpac Amex: For bonus points eligibility, this [the Westpac] card is considered to be a bank-issued card, so won’t affect your eligibility for bonus points on American Express-issued cards.
Thanks Brandon! I’ve submitted my application for this new offer and it came back approved. Fingers crossed!
Will the offer end on 15th or will I have the whole day and night on the 15th (i.e 11:59pm) to apply?
Likelihood in past offers that this would get extended? historically speaking do these get extended a little longer?
Great offer!!
So tempted although upon checking with Amex Online chat, I’m still serving the 18 month exclusion until 8 November, please bring back offer before Xmas!

Hi Loki, that’s a frustrating situation to be in! Unfortunately, you’ll need to chat with Amex to determine eligibility around this.
I currently hold a supplementary card from AMEX. Will I be eligible for this offer?
Hi Eric, as long as you aren’t the main Card Member of any other American Express card, you should be eligible as only a supplementary card holder.
When does the $249 Statement Credit get applied to the card? As soon as $3,000 has been spent within the first 3 months post-approval?
Hi Ben, the T&Cs say to allow 8-10 weeks after meeting the minimum spend amount to receive the 75,000 Qantas Points and $249 statement credit.
I have a supplementary card on an AMEX Reserve card. Is that considered “any card issued by American Express”?
Supplementary cards are not counted in terms of sign-up bonus points.
hi there!
i’m a bit confused about The Qantas American Express Ultimate Card.

It sounds like you may be looking to maximise your spend on groceries, so may I suggest reading our guide to the best credit cards to earn frequent flyer points at supermarkets.
Hi Keith. I have (and love) my Qantas Amex Premium card but want to upgrade. How does an existing card holder go about that?
You wouldn’t be able to upgrade from Amex and pick up a bonus unless you are applying for a different card type – more on this here. If you want to upgrade anyway, then give Amex a call.

Hi, great website. I just applied today but will get a 5-10 day answer. Will I still be able to get the 80k points if approved?
Thank you
Thanks Will. Yes, bonus point offers are based on application date.
Hi Keith,
Great work by the way, do the 80000 points get added to the already existing points on your qantas ff card? And what is the 1% establishment fee? And any other hidden fee’s?

Hey Greg – if it’s issued by your company and you didn’t apply for it personally, and you don’t pay it off personally, it should not impact your eligibility for the bonus points.
Hi Keith! I’ve just got a few questions surrounding this card:
If i’m currently not a member of the Qantas Frequent Flyer program do I also have to sign up for this ($90 AU)?
Do the points earned stay in the QFF account even if I was to cancel the card after 1 year?

Some free Qantas Frequent flyer membership links can be found here. And yes, to your second question.
Is this correct, if I have an existing Amex card I can’t apply for this card? If this is the case it seems like an argument for card churn. So much for loyalty!
PS. I’ve had a basic Amex card forever……….just as back for emergency.
That’s unfortunately the case Charles…
Do the points go directly to your qff. Or do they go to a seperate place like my anz reward which then 1/2 when I transfer them over?
The points earned with cards in the Qantas Amex range are swept over to Qantas directly once per month, no other loyalty programs involved.
Do you know if paypal transactions are included in the $3000 spend in the first three months?
Yes, Paypal transactions are eligible spend (but don’t be tempted to Paypal yourself – both from a fee POV, and Amex also frown on you doing this)
Hello Keith – I have a bank issued Amex (linked with a MasterCard). Do you know if that makes me ineligible for this card. My reading is that I would still qualify because the Amex I have hasn’t been issued by American Express. I would be interested in your thoughts on this. Thanks!
Your bank issued Amex wouldn’t make you ineligible for the bonus points.
Can I apply for the new Qantas Amex Premium Card when I already hold a couple of other Amex cards?
If those cards are issued by Amex, it would be unlikely you’d receive the bonus points.
Hi Keith! Would someone with a ANZ Frequent Flyer Black card (Qantas 75,000 points) be eligible for the 80,000 points bonus with this card, as the ANZ amex is bank-issued and this one is amex-issued?
Thanks!
Hey Adam – holding an account with another bank wouldn’t be a reason to disqualify you from the bonus points.
i’m a bit stuck as to which way to go with this one, so I’m putting it out there. I need to make a purchase of around $8,000 USD in accomodation between now and September, with $1,300 due when I book this month.

Hi Keith,
What’s the likelihood on the eligibility of the bonus points if I currently hold an AMEX issues Gold card?
Slim would be my understanding unfortunately.

Does this card give access to Amex lounge at sydney international or other airports?
No, it doesn’t. You’ll need the Qantas Ultimate for that, which offers 2 x access to Sydney International.
