Qantas has changed the path to Green Tier a few times, so now you’ll need a different approach to earn all five ticks. But for the uninitiated, what is Green Tier anyway?

Green Tier is separate from your normal ‘flying’ level, so you can double up for maximum perks – putting Qantas ‘Green and Gold’ status on the cards for travellers. Qantas Green Tier members can earn an annual bonus of 10,000 Qantas Points or 50 Status Credits, amongst other rewards.

How do I earn Qantas Green Tier?

Just like status earned from flying, Green Tier must be earned or retained each membership year.

Updated for 2026, that’s achieved by completing at least five of the following six activities each year:

  1. Offset your flying: purchase carbon offsets when booking a flight on the Qantas website or for an upcoming flight. You can use Qantas Points for this.
  2. Travel sustainably: by staying in an ‘eco hotel’ booked on Qantas Hotels. There are some city hotels available.
  3. Live sustainably: use GreenPower from Red Energy, recycle with ReSmart or install solar panels through Solargain
  4. Shop sustainably: purchase ‘sustainable sips’ wines from Qantas Wine
  5. Learn: take a quiz in the Qantas Wellbeing app or complete four weekly surveys with the Saveful App
  6. Give back: donate points to community outreach charities on Qantas Marketplace.

An example of how to reach Qantas Green Tier in 2026

I recently requalified for Green Tier in January 2026. Here are the five things I did:

  • Offset one of my upcoming Qantas flights with points (cost 746 points)
  • Stayed at Ovolo South Yarra during a visit to Melbourne (cost $200 for a night)
  • Bought Four Pillars non-alcoholic gin from Qantas Wine (cost $34.14 for two bottles after discounts)
  • Completed surveys via the Saveful App
  • Donated $25 to OzHarvest via Qantas Marketplace (cost 3,200 points)

The overall cost to me was $234.14 and 3,946 Qantas Points to maintain my Green Tier status. The biggest expense was finding a participating ‘eco hotel’ – luckily, I had a Melbourne trip coming up, and Ovolo South Yarra was convenient and well-priced for my stay. I did rebook from a similarly-priced city hotel specifically for the Green Tier tick.

I’ve previously chosen the 10,000 bonus Qantas Points. But this year, as I was very close to re-attaining Platinum status again, I chose the 50 bonus Status Credits to help me get there sooner.

  1. Hi Brandon, Your article was excellent and made it so easy to get Green Tier. I followed it, choosing: Wellbeing app; Offset; Non-alcoholic Bandwagon Gin, Ozharvest; and a stay at Ovollo South Yarra in the Rockstar suite last week. Within 48 hours of my hotel stay, Green Tier appeared in my App, I selected 50 status credits, tipped me into to retaining Platinum. Thankyou! Its appreciated 🙂

    1. Goodbye Green Tier! Thank you for the memories (and SCs). It was fun to learn wellbeing across the app quizzes, be nudged into extra movement & steps, donate to charities, stay in new green hotels and partake in non-alcoholic bevs! ;P

  2. I have found the Travel Sustainable activity somewhat painful in that there is no clear list of hotels that are considered eco friendly/sustainable on the Qantas website. When searching, there is no icon on the properties listing and the link at the bottom of the sustainable hotel website that is meant to take you to the full list of hotels takes one in a circle back to the same page. I have reported this to Qantas and they pretty much didn’t want to know. I think it was put in the Too Hard basket

  3. I have achieved green tier and was already green tier this membership year but my “membership” does not reflect the achievement for the next membership year after achieving this status as it should (and as it shows in the Ts and Cs). Forums say it’s a glitch but email to Qantas FF resulted in a reply that didn’t address my concern. I don’t see many benefits from it other than the points or SCs, but I believe some people have attended member events etc. I’d quite like for my card to reflect the effort, cost and points this cost me (points only for the charity contribution – no cash option).

  4. Article was a bit sparse.
    Love to know the cheapesr method.
    I am one leaf away with either qantas hotels or red energy green energy so should be attainable but hotels are limited in big cities & as an existing red energy qnatas customer i sm not sure how the grewn energy requirement affects my plan price.

  5. Carbon offsets for the home and car have mysteriously disappeared. Makes it insanely harder to qualify for Green Tier now.

  6. Can anyone who has selected the 50 status credits reward recall how long it took to receive it? The terms and conditions say up to 3 days, but I’ve heard it hits your account instantly. I thought I was on track for gold status so I went for green tier to get me closer. My plans changed and I won’t be reaching gold this year. So I would only want to select status credits if I can select it on the last day of my membership year (30 April) and receive it the next day or later so that it counts towards the next membership year to help me retain silver. If it’s instant, I’ll choose 10,000 points instead.

    1. It’s generally instant at the time you make the nomination. However, once you have activated the Green Tier options (by earning the fifth Green Tier leaf), you have circa 3 months to nominate your preference. The ‘activity date’ of your selection reflects the date of the choice – so if the three-month period you have to make that choice carries into your new membership year, make that choice in your new membership year and it’ll count towards that year’s status.

      1. Thanks for your response. I got confused because the Green Tier page in my QFF account says to select a reward before it expires on 30 April 2025. That’s the end of my membership year so I assumed that was the reason. I thought I’d only just achieved the fifth leaf a month ago but I just checked my emails and it was actually 30 January (time flies, eh?). So 30 April happens to be 90 days from that date and it’s just a coincidence that it’s the end of my membership year. If I’d achieved the fifth leaf a couple of days later I would have been able to select the reward in my next membership year. You live and learn!

  7. Hi Brandon, as an extension to this article, I would like to know what is the cheapest way to hit all the green leaves to get the reward. That will help me weigh up whether to spend the money or not.

  8. My qantas app and website still has the Wellbeing App under “Reduce You Impact” and the 4 donation choices under “Give Back”

    I have already received the give back leaf from donating to the barrier reef foundation.

    If I donate to Unicef will it come through as another leaf?

    I did the quiz last year, so it is not available again.

  9. I have done 5 activities and only credited for 4. Carbon offset has been completed 3 times the first 17 days ago called Qantas frequent flyer after the 7 day cooling off period told they would call back in 3 to 5 days. Did another 2 carbon off set flights 9 days ago. Called Qantas again 5 days after first phone call told an email would be sent to the green tier department and would get a call in 3 to 5 days. Just called Qantas again today after 8 hours & 41 minutes later, 3 call centre operators (one from baggage claim) I was told they would call me tomorrow. Refused to place call to supervisor and was hung up on by call centre.

    1. If you haven’t realised it yet, Qantas hate their customers.
      This is the airline of price gouging, 7 mths for refunds, lost bags, 5 hr phone waits, filthy planes, an old decrepit fleet, a CEO that blames customers for their stuff ups and appalling ground and flight service.

  10. If you used points you could achieve it for less than $1 in cash outlay. I just did it for $17 and 3200 in points but I think the most efficient would be about $80 and 3200 points. My path was:
    (1) Did the quiz;
    (2) Offset a domestic SYD-MEL flight @ $0.98;
    (3) Donated to a charity @ 3,200 points;
    (4) Offset the carbon footprint of my holiday house in Tas for $15;
    (5) Made a delivery of wine that I was otherwise going to buy carbon neutral @ $1;.
    I think point (5) is where the expense cannot be avoided – I think the cheapest option would be a single bottle of the Voyager Chardonnay @ $25, making it about $42 and 3,200 points overall.

    The only concerning thing is that their systems do not appear to work well on this yet… I just hit all of the above in about 10 minutes and none of it has been recognised yet. Hopefully it will all sync through overnight. You do also have to put up with the stupid green banner on your digital card which I am worried will displace my lifetime gold banner.

    It is also slightly annoying – crap like this is the reason why the premium line is always longer than the economy line at check in and boarding, and the reason why the business lounge is always overrun… End status largesse I say.

  11. This is pretty cool, I hope that Virgin ends up doing something along the lines of what Qantas is doing here. I love to travel and keep up my status when able but do feel a bit bad about how much carbon I’m putting out by doing it.

    Having more options to keep status but maybe not booking an extra connection just for the status would be really good and I have been thinking about options around paying to offset what I put up driving my car.
