The card is targeted at smaller business owners, looking for a Charge card (meaning you can access a line of unsecured funding with flexible spending power=) with the ability to earn Qantas Points, and boost the Qantas Points they can earn from their business travel with Qantas.

Qantas Points earned on the card are credited to a business’ Qantas Business Rewards account rather than a Qantas Frequent Flyer account, which gives businesses increased flexibility in how they can redeem Qantas Points earned from spend on the card – Qantas Business Rewards allows business owners to transfer Qantas Points to any Qantas Frequent Flyer member. Free Qantas Business Rewards membership is also included with the card (usually $89.50).

The Qantas Business Rewards Card offers a variety of travel benefits such as two domestic Qantas Club Complimentary Lounge Invitations each year+, and business-friendly features such as travel inconvenience cover and the ability to monitor expenditure.

Use your Qantas Business Rewards Points to upgrade your business travel into Business Class.

Qantas Business Rewards allows small business owners to use their points with more flexibility

The key benefit of using Qantas Business Rewards as the loyalty program linked to the card is that the program allows you to earn Qantas Points into your Qantas Business Rewards account.

Qantas Points in the Qantas Business Rewards account can then be transferred to any individual Qantas Frequent Flyer account.

Which means the Qantas Points aren’t locked into a single frequent flyer account and offers an easy way to distribute points to staff members as additional rewards, incentives or for multiple company executives to redeem the business’ Qantas Points for flights or upgrades.

This is a big difference for small business owners, compared to using a card linked to an individual frequent flyer account.

Earning Points with American Express Qantas Business Rewards Card

As mentioned before, this card earns Qantas Points into a Qantas Business Rewards account. This means there are a number of advantages for business owners vs earning points into a personal Qantas Frequent Flyer account, which we get into later in this guide.

The full set of points earn rates with the card are summarised as follows:

  • 2 Qantas Points per $1 spent on Qantas products in Australia^
  • 1.25 Qantas Points per $1 spent on all other purchases, except those listed in 0.5 points category ^
  • 0.5 Qantas Points per $1 spent on utilities, insurance providers (with the exception of American Express) and government bodies, which includes the ATO^

The earn rate for Card Members varies based on the purchase – most transactions will yield 1.25 Qantas Points per dollar.

In addition, purchases of Qantas products – such as Qantas passenger flights (with a QF flight number) purchased directly from Qantas, Qantas Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club membership joining and annual fees, and accommodation booked through Qantas – will all earn 2 Qantas Points per $1 spent. Note that spend with Jetstar is excluded from the bonus.

After a total of 500,000 Qantas Points is earned in a calendar year, the everyday business earn rate will change from 1.25 to 0.75 Qantas Points per $1 spent.^

Qantas Business Rewards offers additional points for flights taken by members in the account based on distance – the points earned are based on the number of points that would be earned by a Bronze status Frequent Flyer member for the flight (regardless of the actual status of the passenger), and a multiplier of between 20% – 40% depending on your Qantas Business Rewards Membership level.

Card Members can also transfer up to 20,000 points to their Qantas Frequent Flyer account that can be counted towards Qantas Points Club.

Our full guide to Qantas Business Rewards explains this in more detail, but in short there are a number of different levels as you advance through the program based on how many points you earn from flying.

This means points earned from flights will count towards your Qantas Business Rewards membership level, meaning Card Members who fly with Qantas are going to earn even more points. Higher membership levels in Qantas Business Rewards are going to be easier to attain given the additional earning power of the card.

So, summing up – for an eligible Qantas flight, a Qantas Business Rewards American Express Card Members would earn:

  • The usual number of Qantas Points into their personal Qantas Frequent Flyer account for the flight
  • Plus 2 Qantas Points per $1 spent when using the card

To be eligible for the American Express Qantas Business Rewards Card, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Australian citizen or a permanent resident

Flexible Payment Option

Business owners can free up their cash flow with access to a line of unsecured funding with flexible spending power= on their Charge Card. Instead of paying off the balance in full each statement period, it can be paid off over time.

How it works:

  2. They can choose to pay the Closing Balance, the minimum amount due, or any amount in between (up to their Flexible Payment Option Limit).
  3. They can carry over any unpaid amount to their next month’s balance. Any amount not paid in full will incur interest at a rate of 23.99% p.a. until repaid.

With Flexible Payment Option, you will be charged interest if you do not pay your Closing Balance in full by the due date each month. Please refer to your monthly statements for the current interest rate. Please refer to the full Flexible Payment Option Terms and Conditions.

American Express don’t allow existing Card Members, even for different types of American Express cards (e.g. Charge, Credit or Business) to be eligible for bonus points offers for cards in a different family.

Summing Up

Overall, this is a card well worth considering by business owners looking for more Qantas Points from their business spend, even more so given the link to Qantas Business Rewards offering more flexibility in how business owners can direct their points when they want to redeem them.

It would work especially well if the business’s primary travel spend and patterns are with Qantas and paid for by the business directly.

It will also appeal to those looking at the benefits of a charge card, that lets you access a line of unsecured funding with flexible spending power= meaning businesses can put through larger transactions on the Card and earn Qantas Points.

The Qantas Business Rewards card may have a relatively high annual fee, but don’t forget it can be a tax-deductible expense. The card also has good points earn rates and uncapped points earn on card business spend, which can offer value for those looking to earn Qantas Points through their business’ everyday spending and travel.

  1. As of May 2024, does this card still give you a domestic flight voucher equivalent to the cost of the annual fee?

  2. According to the offer details, I understand that I can earn 150,000 bonus Qantas Points if I spend $3,000 on eligible purchases within the first two months of my card approval.

However, I would like to seek clarification regarding a specific type of spending. Could you please confirm whether a payment made directly to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) qualifies as an eligible purchase towards this offer?

  3. In regard to eligibility, does personal income impact this?

The application asks for both business revenue and personal annual income. My business revenue is above the 75k required, but personal income is well below this as the business pays both my spouse and I.

    Will this impact approval?

    1. Hi Jack, if you go through our link it’s 160,000 points + 20,000 bonus for first-timers. Different partners can have different offers, so it helps to ‘shop around’.

    1. Hi JC, I’ve looked into this and it appears you’re correct that the $450 Qantas Travel Credit is not showing. I’ve alerted the team and we will update/fix the page ASAP.

  4. Hi,

If I sign up under my business for this card, and cancel the card later, do I lose the points? My partner and I both have personal Qanras FF accounts, but we don’t have a business one. Does a business one work the same way?

    Cheers

    1. Hi Jeremy

NO, you will not lose your points once they are credited to your Qantas Business Rewards account, so long as you meet all the expiration policies for keeping Qantas Business Rewards points active.

  5. Just spoke to someone at Amex about this card and the bonus points offer.

If any director of the business has held an American Express card in their name in the past 18 months, business or personal, then the applicant does not qualify for the bonus points.

  6. hi daniel
can you please clarify the criteria for this business card as the Amex website states min revenue is $75k, not $24k as stated in this article, and also needs to be GST registered.
    regards
    gianni

  7. Based on the current offer (130k Qantas points), does anyone actually find value in applying for this card?

Although you get the 130k points, the annual fee of $450 and no travel credit or lounge passes provided to offset the annual fee really negates the value for me to keep it passed the first year.
Being a small business owner, it would take a lot of spending (with places that actually accept amex) to even get enough points to offset the annual fee.

I might see larger business with expenses worth $100,000’s + seeing value, though then other non-amex cards exist on the market with lower annual fees (or waived if have home loan with the financial institution) and better incentives (e.g. ANZ Qantas Black CC).

    1. Hi Benji

Generally speaking, business cards such as this one forgo the travel credit that you might find on a personal card as they offer other ‘business specific’ benefits, such as complimentary additional cardholders that exceed what you get on a personal card and automatic feeds into accounting packages to name a few.

Again, whether this provides value to you is based on your specific business requirements.

  8. How would a charge card affect my credit rating compared to a credit card?
Also, an insurance policy of mine was defaulted 18 months ago due to a replacement card being issued and me forgetting to update my credit card debit details… How would that affect my application? (FYI that credit card was recently paid off & cancelled)
    Cheers

  9. Has anyone done the maths on whether it is worth paying ATO bills using this card when the points are .5 QANTAS point per dollar and Amex fee from ATO is 1.45%?

    1. Well lets use an example of you having to pay $20,000 ATO bill.
      – $20,000 (@ 0.5 points per dollar spent) = 10000 points
      – 1.45% of $20,000 = $290

Therefore in this scenario, you are paying $290 for 10,000 QFF points.
You are essentially paying 2.9c per point, which in my opinion is very poor value.

If you were a few points short of your dream redemption, then you might find value, though in general I wouldn’t use this method as a way to accumulate points.

Disclaimer: What I have noted about is just my opinion (based on the facts/figures provided), and is not in any way a recommendation on what you should do with your point collection strategy. You should perform your own due diligence (or seek professional advice) before taking any action.

      1. Hi Benji

Thanks for your reply. This is a reasonable way to look at it and as you correctly highlighted, the value will be subject on your specific circumstance and objective.

  10. Where can I find details on the requirement for new members to “spend $3,000 on their new Card in the first 2 months from the Card approval date …” I can’t see this in writing in any of the 3 terms and conditions brochures, or list of FAQs shown for this card on the AMEX website.

  11. I hold an AMEX card in my own right
If I apply in the name of my Pty Ltd Company of which I am a director am I excluded ??

    1. Hi Chris,

As far as we know, Amex assess small business cards against the individual applying even though the application looks at the company as well. This means holding any Amex-issued card product in the preceding 18-month period will rule you out for this bonus offer.

It’s probably best to give Amex a call to confirm this.

  12. Hi Keith
    Thanks for the post.
This would be a great card for me but I got the DJ’s card this year. Would I be eligible for the points?
    Thanks Luciana

  13. Its weird how they dont allow bonus points for non-business amex holders. This isn’t the practice for other business cc providers.
