EnergyAustralia offering 10,000 Membership Rewards points and some discounts for new gas and electricity customers

EnergyAustralia have joined forces with American Express to offer 10,000 Membership Rewards points for new account-holders of their gas or electricity plans.

This offer is definitely not an easy one to assess, with every state’s different energy pricing regulations and everyone’s individual needs meaning you’ll have to compare against your current plan or other potential new suppliers to be sure the points are worth it.

The points are available for new accounts requested up to April 8th, and will credit after your first bill is paid. 10,000 Membership Rewards points is a decent bonus, so it’s worth considering.

You’ll need to have Amex set as your bill payment option after signing up, and commit to a 12 month plan minimum.

The full offer pages for you to kick off your own research are here:

I couldn’t find offer pages for the other states, so if you have a link to one please share and I’ll update.

  1. an update for those who are interested

after exchanging a few emails with EA, they said I am eligible for the bonus points even as an existing customer.

now, I just gotta work out if this is worth it, if I sign up for this offer, my electricity/gas rates and supply charge will go up by a little, after the discounts, I will end up saving maybe $20 per 90 days bill, and I will be locked in for 12 months (apparently no exit fees)

will also be shopping around as well, it is even worst that credit card shopping……..

  2. damn, I am an existing customer for Energy Australia so I guess I am out of luck? (not in contract though, maybe it is worth a try?)

also, I didn’t even realised that EA accepts Amex, but after triple checking my last bill, looks like I could pay with Amex by phone……….. last time I paid a bill by phone was probably back in the 90’s!

  3. What happens if you have a AMEX Qantas discovery card ? Can you still get AMEX points ?
Also if you sign up on the Energy Australia website you get $50 credit, 17% off pay on time discount and an extra 2% for signing up online. so this 10,000 points are not really worth it.

  4. I got the offer as I have Amex Platinum Edge.
Paying with Amex Plat Edge only gives 0.5 MR points per $1.
I suppose, until the 10k MR points are received, switch to other cards to pay the bill.

  5. FYI – the only state you’re missing is SA. No other states have contestable markets for elec or gas; hence EA can only operate as a retailer in SA, VIC, NSW (incl. ACT), and QLD.

  6. I signed up recently, and I don’t think there is a 12 month commitment requirement to get the bonus points. I recall the contract saying “no exit fees”.

Also, I believe this is targeted. Note the wording (from the NSW offer fine print) “first successful payment with EnergyAustralia on the eligible American Express Card”

  7. You’ll need to have Amex set as your bill payment option after signing up, and commit to a 12 month plan minimum.
I’ve received the offer but didn’t see what Keith has mentioned above.

    1. Hey Bab –
On the 12 month mininum, you might be right – I saw

Electricity and gas discounts are available for a one-year benefit term

But maybe points are available for uncommitted plans as well?

With the other part of that comment, the terms state

Transactions processed by third party processors such as PayPal or Australia Post are not eligible for Bonus Points
