With some work (and a sprinkle of luck), you could book Business Class for much less than the normal asking price. As long as reward seats are available, buying Air Canada Aeroplan points is a clever way to book premium travel for less. This latest promotion with buying points means you could be booking a Business Class redemption sooner.
Thanks to Air Canada’s Star Alliance partnership, points earned (or bought) in its Aeroplan program can be used on flights worldwide. This includes direct services between Australia and Bangkok on Thai Airways and Japan on ANA, as well as services with Singapore Airlines.

Up to 90% bonus when you buy Aeroplan Points
| Expiry: 11:59 pm PST on 19 March 2026 (~5:59 pm on 20 March in AEST) |
The latest offer is up to 90% bonus points when you purchase up to 500,000 Aeroplan Points. This means you could end up with 950,000 Aeroplan Points if you purchase the maximum amount in one go. The offer is tiered and can vary, so here’s a summary of the tier bonuses.
- Buy 4,000 – 1,600 points: 40% bonus
- Buy 20,000 – 12,000 points: 60% bonus
- Buy 70,000 – 63,000 points: 90% bonus
* the tier thresholds themselves can also vary – check Aeroplan to see yours. Some readers may receive different offer amounts, including up to 90% bonus.
This is a decent offer for Aeroplan Points. With a 90% bonus, you’ll pay 1.97 cents (CAD) per point. Note that you can only buy in increments of 1,000 points up to 10,000 base points. Above that, the increments broaden to 5,000 points.
A sweet spot for many is buying 100,000 pts + bonus 90,000 pts (190,000 pts total) for CA$3,750. That’s enough for four one-way Business Class flights between Australia and many destinations in Asia, plus fees and taxes (and you’ll have 10,000 points left over).
Example of how you can buy Aeroplan Points for flights
- Cost of 190,000 miles with 90% bonus: ~A$3,896 (CA$3,750)
- Cost per ANA Sydney-Tokyo flight (45,000 miles): A$974 + A$145 (CA$136) fees and taxes
- Total cost for one-way ANA flight to Tokyo: A$1,079
- Approximate savings: ~55% off based on a return cash fare of A$4,758

Buying a full serve of 950,000 Aeroplan Points (500,000 base points with an 90% bonus) clocks in at CA$18,750. That’s about AU$19,735. Sales tax is levied on top when using a Canadian credit card, but not when buying from addresses in Australia or the United States.

Summing up
Air Canada’s Aeroplan program is surprisingly useful for Australian travellers. Thanks to its Star Alliance membership and separate partnership with Etihad, Virgin Australia and Emirates, there are plenty of savvy options for buying and spending Aeroplan Points.
But again, our standard caveats apply. We don’t advise you to buy points speculatively in this climate — only if there’s an immediate booking you want to make using those points. And don’t forget to check for reward seat availability on the Air Canada website before buying points!
Aeroplan was good a year or 2 ago for redemptions in SQ business SYD – Europe, no longer the case. Very difficult finding any
Flights, other than ridiculous multi cabin with only 5% in Business. Buying bonus points for me with 100% bonus points is fools gold. Aeroplan is not a go to program for me anymore.
It’s only showing an 80% bonus – am I missing something?
I’ve bought points again this year but the bonus is not posting and the flights are disappearing ! Any advice please !
Warning to anyone thinking of buying points that want to redeem on Sq and live in Mel or Syd. At this point all business class redemptions have disappeared.
Any chance the offer history table within the article could be updated to include 2025 offers?
ANA, Etihad, Thai, Air China, Gulf Air amongst others are blocked by Aeroplan for redemptions in business.
Good luck finding any flights!
I am only seeing 85% bonus
Is that also while logged in? I could only see 85% initially but when I logged in it became 100%.
I have also checked when logged in and can only see an offer for up to 85% bonus points max.
Unfortunately the offers are sometimes tiered, hence why we need to put ‘up to’ in the title. Hopefully you get the max offer next time.
Hi Brandon, I tried looking for flights in late May to Athens or Istanbul, business class one way. The offerings were difficult. For example there was a flight from Sydney via Melbourne (with Virgin) and then I think Etihad to Abu Dhabi, but nothing direct from Melbourne to Abu Dhabi.
Is this why your article emphasises shorter flights to Asia?
Hi Steve, yes it’s not as good for those flights to Europe because of limited availability. The flights to Asia are both better value and easier to find, so that’s why we focus on those.
Hi Brendon, if I purchase 50,000 Aeroplan points, will I be qualified for gold status? Cheers John
Hi John, miles for status have to be earned from flying.
Currently having a bad experience with Aeroplan, purchased a substantial amount of points in their latest promotion in May, my money taken and base points credited to account but not the bonus points. I have been trying to call them and its so hard with the time difference, they just disconnect my call, website contact centre replied back saying 10 weeks wait for them to look at the query and feeling very disappointed. Will keep trying but never buying aeroplan miles again.
…for a newbie …to book the reward seat on a partner airline is still via Air Canada or…..on that airline direct eg say booking on ANA
Hi Brandon,
I tried searching flights on a range of dates on some of the routes you have in your table and couldn’t find anything under 300k. It was harder than trying to find availability in J using velocity!
Is it notoriously difficult to find saver awards on aeroplan?
Hi Brandon, I’m hitting a stumbling block and can’t find any seats for flights originating out of Australia (on points or otherwise). I have tried using the Canadian edition as well as the Oz edition of the website. When you search using points nothing comes up and if you search for normal paid seats (eg. Melbourne to Bangkok) it says those routes can’t be booked online and you need to phone Air Canada. Any tips?
Has this article been posted in error? Expiry date of the offer was three months ago:
“Expiry: 2:59 am ET on 29 November 2022 (~5:59 pm on 30 November in AEDT)”
It was posted NOVEMBER 15, 2023. You are just reading it 3 months later.
Aero miles are nice! But there is no point transfer options available from AMEX AU or CITIBANK AU to Aero either.
I noticed there is an option via Hilton.
Accor allows transfer to Aero too but AMEX AU and CITI doesnt allow transfers to Accor either.
I am looking for options Mel Lon and found their award search being amazing!!
Do you have firsthand experience buying miles from Aeroplan? How long do the miles take to post to the account? No one wants to buy now and wait 72 hours, rising availability to vanish.
Thanks
Aeroplan has removed/blocked all Thai Airways rewards seats. You won’t be able find any Thai Airways seats via Aeroplan at this moment. Do you know what the reason is? Too many people booked Thai Airways via Aeroplan? Do you experience same issue?
To get the 100% bonus don’t I need to spend almost $20k otherwise I won’t get that, I will get a smaller bonus. But I thought the golden rule is not to buy points speculatively only when you have a redemption in mind. So if I do, I will have heaps of points left over and spent almost $20k to fly to BKK for $3575? I’m interested to know what it would cost just to buy enough points for that 1 trip, or have I misunderstood?
Hi Angela, with most promos, the top bonus kicks in at a reasonably low around e.g. 80K miles in the last Aeroplan promotion. It works well if you’re redeeming for two people. For example, you need 180,000 points to fly Melbourne-Bangkok and return in Business for two. You can get that by buying 90,000 points + a 100% bonus, with no points left over. It can vary per promotion.
Does ANA actually fly out of Melbourne? I thought they only flew out of Sydney?
I think you mean Etihad not Emirates.
Just booked fights using Aeroplan Miles (which I bought on a previous promotion) to fly Jeddah – Abu Dhabi – Singapore, then Singapore – Sydney using Velocity Points, all in Business Class. Thanks for the tips from Point Hacks!!
Got started being a “Points Hacker” thanks to your website and blogs.
Great job people!!
Hi Ross, we actually do mean Emirates! There was a new partnership announced today.
Agree that the Aeroplan offer is worth considering. Just keep in mind ANA almost always only offer 1 award seat on Sydney- Tokyo. Another seats is sometimes mopened up very close in.
Shame United.com doesnt show any avialability!
If you don’t already have an Aeroplan membership, is there a threshold on length of membership before points can be purchased? – Hirizer
