What happens to your bank rewards points when you cancel a credit card

Remember to check your points before cancelling your card

Woman paying with card

When you cancel a credit card, bank rewards points are usually lost soon after closure. Transfer or redeem them within the program’s grace window. Points already transferred to an airline program are untouched and continue under the airline’s rules.

The order of operations is the whole game. Transfer or redeem first, cancel second. Here is what happens at closure, the pre-cancellation checklist, how the bank programs differ while the account is open, and what a cancellation does not touch.

What happens to bank points when the account closes

Bank points are a currency the issuer manages. Across bank programs, the standard position is that an account closure ends the balance, with each program’s terms setting the exact cutoff. Membership Rewards is a clear example of how this works. American Express points don’t expire while the account remains open and in good standing under the card’s published benefits, making them excellent to hold.

Closing the last eligible account is different. Under the American Express terms, the balance is forfeited immediately once the last Membership Rewards-earning card closes. It remains available indefinitely while the other earning card stays open. The safe plan still moves the points before the cancellation call.

Bank points differ from airline points in one important way. A Qantas Points or Velocity Points balance sits with the airline, not the bank. It therefore isn’t affected when you cancel a credit card. The bank-side balance exists within the card relationship and usually ends when the card does.

The pre-cancellation checklist

The checklist runs transfer, confirm, then cancel. First, choose where to transfer the balance. Consider which airline program suits your travel plans and redemption needs. Weigh up which program’s chart prices your likely bookings best and whose expiry clock you can keep feeding once this card stops earning. Our guides explain how to transfer Membership Rewards points to airlines and bank points into Velocity.

Second, complete the transfer and confirm the points have reached the destination account before doing anything else. Transfer times vary by program. Avoid requesting account closure while a transfer is still processing. Third, redeem or move any points that cannot meet the minimum transfer amount. Only then close the account.

The Point Hacks credit card cancellation checklist covers the steps around transferring points, timing the fee and closing the account.

  • Warning: cancelling the card involved several steps. Follow the order to help protect your points balance
  • Check the full points balance, including any pending points from recent statements that have not been credited
  • Choose the destination program and confirm you meet its transfer minimum. Complete the transfer and confirm the points have reached the destination account
  • Ask the issuer how it will handle any remaining points before cancelling. Program terms differ on the cut-off
  • Cancel last and keep the account closure confirmation and final statement

How the bank programs differ while the account stays open

The programs differ in what happens while your account remains open. This can affect how quickly you need to use or transfer your points. Membership Rewards points do not expire while the account stays open. Cardholders can keep the points indefinitely and transfer them when a suitable reward seat becomes available.

Other programs have expiry rules while the accounts remain open. ANZ Rewards points expire 36 months after 31 December of the year they were earned. Under ANZ Rewards’ terms as of September 2026, members have 90 days to redeem points after the account closes. If you hold ANZ Rewards points, check their expiry date regardless of whether you plan to cancel the card.

Some card structures automatically transfer bank points, so fewer points remain in the bank program. The ANZ Rewards Platinum card can automatically transfer points to Velocity each month. As a result, cancelling the card may leave only points below the 2,000-point transfer minimum.

These differences make the general rule practical rather than universal. Know your own program’s expiry and closure terms well before you plan to cancel the card. The terms live in the program’s own documents, not the card marketing. A few minutes spent checking the terms can help you avoid losing a large points balance.

What a cancellation does not touch, and what else it ends

Cancelling the card doesn’t affect airline balances, but each airline program still applies its own expiry rules. Qantas Points require earning or redeeming activity at least once every 18 months and Velocity Points every 24 months. If the closed card was the cardholder’s main source of points, they need another way to earn or redeem points. The points expiry policies roundup compares the rules, while the Velocity Points expiry guide covers the Velocity-specific dates.

Cancelling the card can also end its attached benefits. The timing depends on the terms of each benefit. Complimentary travel insurance is the clearest example. The policy documents for Chubb-underwritten American Express cards sets out when cover applies after cancellation. A claim event after cancellation may not be covered, even if the trip was booked while the card was active. The Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) sets out the applicable terms. If you cancel between booking and travelling, check whether your travel insurance remains valid.

Annual credits and lounge entitlements can also end when the card closes, depending on their term. Alternative cards and their Qantas points earn rate are compared in our Qantas Points-earning credit card round-ups.

Frequently asked questions

Treat the answer as no. Program terms make closure the cutoff for the bank-side balance. Restoration isn’t a documented feature, and you should confirm anything you’re told verbally in writing before you rely on it. That is why the transfer-first sequence exists.

No, the airline balance is unaffected by the card closure itself. The airline’s own activity rules take over. Qantas Points need activity every 18 months and Velocity Points every 24 months. After cancellation, the job is to replace the activity source, not rescue the balance. A reward booking, an earning purchase through a program partner, or a points transfer all count as activity under the airline rules.

Sometimes, but it is not automatically safe. A product change can alter or end benefits. The American Express insurance documents show coverage changing on a downgrade. Points treatment on product changes varies by issuer, so the same confirm before you act rule applies to a downgrade as to a closure.

The fee date matters for value, but the points exit comes first in every sequence, because a fee saved is small beside a balance lost. Once the transfer has landed, the fee timing question belongs to the card comparison covered in the round ups linked above, where current fees sit alongside earn rates and the replacement decision properly lives.

Fees, rates and figures quoted are correct at the time of publication and should be verified directly with each provider before acting on them.
