What Amex Platinum travel insurance actually covers

The inclusions and key exclusions of your Amex travel insurance

Amex Platinum travel insurance covers medical emergency expenses, trip cancellation and amendment, baggage, money and documents, rental vehicle excess and personal liability. Cover only applies once it activates. It activates when a return trip is paid for with the Platinum Card or with Membership Rewards points. It can also apply when frequent flyer or travel points are used and the taxes and charges go on the Card.

The cover is complimentary card insurance, rather than a policy owned by the cardholder. Chubb Insurance Australia Limited underwrites the cover under a group policy held by American Express Australia Limited. The policy wording is effective from 15 March 2022. The information here was checked as of September 2026.

Exclusions, including those relating to pre-existing medical conditions, can affect whether a claim is covered. Here is how the cover activates, what it includes, the exclusions to consider, and how to confirm cover before flying.

How the cover activates and who it protects

The cover activates when you make a qualifying travel purchase, not by simply holding the card. The cardholder, their spouse and dependent children are eligible for travel insurance. Additional Cardholders, their spouses and dependent children are also covered when a return trip is paid for with the Platinum Card or with Membership Rewards points. The insurance benefits page carries the current summary.

The card account must also be active. A suspended or cancelled account is not eligible for cover. The legal structure affects what cardholders can expect from the cover. Chubb Insurance Australia Limited issues the insurance under a group policy held by American Express.

Cardholders access the cover as third-party beneficiaries under the Insurance Contracts Act, rather than as policyholders. This means the cover can be changed or ended by the parties to the group policy. American Express states that it will notify cardholders before changes that reduce or remove benefits.

What the Platinum travel insurance includes

The cover applies to a range of events that can cancel, interrupt or disrupt a trip. Medical emergency expenses cover applies to international travel, but you must follow an important assistance requirement. In a medical emergency, the cardholder must call Chubb Assistance before seeking treatment. Otherwise, they may be responsible for their own medical costs.

Trip cancellation and amendment cover responds when listed events force a booking to change. Baggage, money and documents cover deals with loss along the way. Rental vehicle cover addresses loss or damage to a hire car. Personal liability cover also applies. Assistance services are available for legal, roadside and home emergencies attached to the program.

Each section has its own limits, sub-limits, and conditions. Some sections apply only outside Australia, while others apply only within it. The policy document is a map, not a marketing page. The card also carries retail covers such as Card Purchase Cover and a Smartphone Screen Insurance benefit of up to $500 with a 10 per cent excess as of September 2026. These benefits are separate from travel sections but form part of the same Chubb group policy.

The key exclusions and limits to plan around

The exclusion that decides the most claims is the medical one. The policy excludes losses arising from a pre-existing medical condition under every section but one. The exception is Section F, Resumption of a Long International Trip Cover. There is no assessment pathway to change that outcome. The exclusion can also apply to medical conditions affecting travel companions and relatives when their health triggers the claim.

Age limits are another restriction, with complimentary cover generally unavailable from age 80. Higher age thresholds apply to some claim triggers involving close relatives. The third restriction is activation. A trip that is not paid for in a qualifying way has no cover, regardless of how long the card has been held.

  • Warning: relying on the cover requires several checks. Complete each one before departure
  • Pay for the return trip with the Platinum Card or Membership Rewards points. Keep the records that prove it
  • Read the pre-existing condition definition against your own history. The exclusion runs under every section of the policy but one. The policy, not your intuition, determines what counts. Reaching conditions that in the two years before the qualifying travel purchase needed medication, check-ups or surgery, or sat under investigation. Stretching to three years for conditions affecting the heart, brain, liver, back or spine, kidneys, or the cardiovascular, circulatory or respiratory system where the condition involved a hospital stay or emergency visit, required surgery or a specialist consultation, or needs ongoing or prescribed medication
  • Confirm the account is active and save the Chubb Assistance number. Contact Chubb Assistance as soon as practicable in a medical emergency
  • Check the age and section limits for every traveller relying on the cover, including additional cardholders and dependants

How to confirm cover before a trip

Confirmation your cover requires checking the policy documents. The full terms sit in the Platinum insurance terms and conditions available from American Express. The summary tables show which sections apply to international against domestic travel. Chubb can confirm specific details before departure. If an exclusion applies, the complimentary cover may not protect that risk.

A pre-existing medical condition is a common example. Consider a standalone policy that assesses your medical conditions. Keep records of your confirmation and any advice you receive. Keep booking records that prove the qualifying payment. Save any written answers from Chubb about your specific circumstances. These records may help support a later claim.

Our guide to complimentary Amex card travel insurance compares this cover with policies on other American Express cards. The insurance is one part of the card’s wider benefits. Our American Express Platinum guide covers those benefits, while the Platinum Business guide covers the business variant.

Several other issuers offer cards with complimentary travel insurance, different activation rules and different underwriters. The payment that activates cover may also count towards a new card’s minimum spend requirement, as explained in our credit card minimum spend guide.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, paying for the return trip with Membership Rewards points activates cover on the Platinum Card, per the current American Express summary. The safe practice is putting any cash component, such as taxes on a reward booking, on the card as well and keeping every record of the payment.

Yes. American Express extends eligibility to Additional Cardholders, their spouses and dependent children when the qualifying payment conditions are met. This makes the Platinum one of the broader complimentary covers for a household travelling together.

The cover ends with the account. The policy’s own examples show that a claim event occurring after cancellation, or after a downgrade to a card without the relevant cover section, is not claimable, so a card change should never sit between booking a trip and taking it without checking the new position.

Generally no. The Platinum cover operates as a single worldwide group policy rather than a country by country product. The activation rules, eligibility and exclusions described above apply wherever the trip goes as of September 2026. The practical checks are destination neutral. Confirm the trip qualifies, the travellers sit inside the age limits, and no pre-existing condition is in play, then read the PDS for any conditions attached to the specific journey. For trips or travellers the policy’s terms leave outside cover, a standalone paid policy remains the fallback, including the separate Chubb travel product American Express distributes, which is a different product from the complimentary card cover.
