Note that the Qantas Hong Kong lounge has now been full refurbished. This review is kept for archive purposes…
Before spending some time in The Wing, one of Cathay Pacific’s many Business Class lounges in Hong Kong, I scouted out the Qantas Business Lounge which is used for Qantas & British Airways departures to Melbourne, Sydney and London.
You’d be able to access this lounge if travelling with Qantas or British Airways in Business Class, or as a Qantas Club member. Given this is Cathay’s home turf, anyone with oneworld Sapphire (Qantas Gold) status or above is probably going to be better served by a Cathay lounge.
Anyway, the Qantas lounge is over near gate 15 under the departures level and is accessed via an escalator. There’s a bit of a dark basement feel, as there are curtained windows along one side of the lounge only with arrival passengers walking past on their way off aircraft and out to immigration.
I arrived about 4pm, a bit early for the scheduled 7.50pm departure of QF128 but with even more time thanks to a 2 hour delay. Not quite ready for dinner, I just grabbed a
(decent for a machine) coffee and a heap of Biscotti and read my book for 1/2 or so.
The food options didn’t look too amazing so I didn’t bother to try any given I had time to kill and knew the food at The Wing or The Cabin should be much better.
The best part about this lounge are the leather loungers over in the far corner, well away from most of the other passengers and perfect for a lazy read, nap or sleep. I spent another 1/2 hour in the corner with a drink and my book, and these were definitely the most comfortable seats I found in my 7 hours hanging around in HKG.
Elsewhere, there’s a good number of iMacs in a seperate work room, and heap of low couches and seats, all of which were comfy enough. There were also a heap of shower rooms, all clean and serviced.
Conclusion
This Qantas lounge doesn’t have anything unique about it to pick it over The Wing or The Cabin (other than some pretty great recliners), but if you don’t have access to those lounges then it’s a fine enough space to spend time in. I can’t vouch for the food quality, but there were definitely dinner type options you could make a good size meal from if that were necessary. If the Qantas First Lounge in Hong Kong is similar, I can understand why Qantas announced they would be upgrading it in August last year.
