Earning points – First Principles: Earning from Offers & Partners

Pretty much anything these days can earn you points. I have no doubt there are a number of things in your everyday life that could and should be earning you points.

Make sure you fuel up at BP and you’ve got yourself some sweet Velocity candy. If you’re getting your car serviced, head down to Midas and again, your Velocity points balance will smile.

Get your cabs with goCatch, and boom- see that Qantas balance go up.

Power bills? Yep- Lumo has you covered for Velocity (except NSW).

Like wine? You’re in luck, for both Velocity and Qantas points.

Want to do some online shopping through some of the most popular stores, like The Iconic, Ebay, Apple or Kogan? Both Virgin and Qantas have online malls you can shop through that will crank those point balances even more.

Travelling? Of course you are- that’s why you’re trying to earn more points. Get that hire car through Hertz, Thrifty or Europcar and you’ve got some Velocity points. Want Qantas points? No problem- just use Avis or Budget instead.

Almost every hotel chain will earn you points with someone. Many will give you the choice of earning points with either Qantas or Virgin too.

Better yet, book the hotel through Qantas Hotels and you’ll bank even more points.

Even doing internet searches can get you points!

Everyday spending, such as mobile phones, utilities and insurance can all earn as well. Take a look at both the Qantas and Virgin sites to see. Your car or home loan could be topping up the balance as well.

Keep in mind that just because something earns you points doesn’t make it a better product – always do your due diligence to make sure you’re not being charged more money for the privilege of earning those extra rewards.
