This program allows customers to earn points for all fuel and in-store purchases. However, most importantly, also allows the customer the flexibility to be rewarded with either BP Rewards points or Qantas Points. I will, of course, be looking at the latter in this guide.
Until 30 June 2020, you can earn 10 bonus Status Credits (SCs) when you sign up to BP Rewards and a further 10 SCs for every 1,000 Qantas Points earned up to a maximum of 40 SCs.
There is a difference between BP Rewards and BP Plus. BP Rewards is the loyalty program for BP. In comparison, the fuel card for business owners is called BP Plus and can be linked to your Qantas Business Rewards account. I look at both options in this guide.
What is BP Rewards?
BP Rewards is the loyalty program for BP petrol stations in Australia. You can choose to earn either BP Rewards points or Qantas Points. You’ll most likely get more value by earning Qantas Points and using them for flight redemptions. The alternative is using BP Rewards points for discounts off fuel and in-store purchases.
How does the BP-Qantas partnership work?
You are able to earn Qantas Points for all fuel and in-store purchases by swiping your Qantas Frequent Flyer card or through the BPme or Qantas apps.
Members earn the following Qantas Points:
- 2 Qantas Point per litre of BP Ultimate 98 Motor Fuel
- 1 Qantas Point per litre of 91, 95, Diesel, Ultimate Diesel or LPG
- 1 Qantas Point per $1 spent on eligible in-store products
BP has advised Point Hacks that you can earn the same number of points for your transactions at BP, whether you choose to earn BP Points or Qantas Points. However, existing BP Plus members will earn different rates, which are shown further below.
The change in partnership to Qantas from Velocity has meant that dedicated to earning Velocity Points from their fuel purchases are now limited to just one option, through the flybuys-Coles Express partnership. (flybuys points can be converted into Velocity Points.)
How does this compare with other fuel offers?
The major alternatives for earning frequent flyer points from fuel and in-store purchases are through flybuys-Coles Express and Woolworths Rewards-Caltex. The former can earn you Velocity Points by transferring flybuys points to Velocity, whereas the latter will allow automatically earn you Qantas Points should you have chosen Qantas Points as your earn option.
To view a detailed comparison of these options, please see our guide on this here.
How and why should I download the BPme app?
Having the BPme app on your phone means that you can pay for fuel from within your car. It will also keep track of earning BP Rewards or Qantas Points on your purchase. You can download the BPme app for iOS or Android.
What is BP Plus?
BP Plus is BP’s business rewards program (different to BP Rewards). It lets business owners consolidate all fuel and vehicle expenses in one GST statement.
How does the BP Plus-Qantas Business Rewards partnership work?
In addition, the BP Plus fuel card has become the exclusive fuel card of the Qantas Business Rewards program, spelling the end for Qantas Business Rewards members being able to earn points when using a Caltex StarCard (partnership ended in January 2020).
It’s free to get a BP Plus fuel card.
Qantas Business Rewards members are eligible to earn Qantas Points as well as discounts on fuel when they fill up at over 1,400 BP locations across Australia using their BP Plus fuel card.
The earn rates are as follows:
- 1 Qantas Point per litre of BP Ultimate 98 Motor Fuel
- 0.5 Qantas Points per litre of 91, 95, Diesel, Ultimate Diesel or LPG
- 1 Qantas Point per $1 spent on eligible in-store products
How do I join BP Plus?
- Go to this page
- Provide your ABN and business details; estimate of annual fuel spend; Direct Debit information and approval; and details of company directors
- Ensure that the ABN on your BP Plus and Qantas Business Rewards accounts matches (they will link automatically if so)
- Wait 5-10 business days for your application to be approved
- Purchase fuel at BP to enjoy discounts and earn Qantas Points
For those loyal to Qantas Frequent Flyer, this is welcome news and provides another option to earn Qantas Points at fuel outlets. It will sit alongside the Caltex-Woolworths Rewards partnership, which will continue as normal. (A reminder you can convert Woolworths Rewards points into Qantas Points).
While the earn rates are quite competitive, they still fall slightly short of the previous Velocity-BP partnership, which earned Velocity members 2 Velocity Points per litre of fuel on all fuel types, albeit the same rate for in-store purchases.
It is welcoming to see that small businesses can benefit from the Qantas Business Rewards-BP Plus partnership, which also have quite competitive rates.
