One of the biggest retail events of the year is upon us, along with some interesting opportunities to earn a lot more bonus frequent flyer points on transactions.

In particular, we’re big fans of deals where you can ‘quadruple-dip’ on points, including with a rewards credit card, AfterPay, an online shopping mall, and through specific program partnerships. If you’re confused about how this works, we’ve highlighted a few examples later on.

What is Black Friday?

Black Friday (and the associated Cyber Monday) is traditionally a United States tradition, marking the day after Thanksgiving that big sales begin. But now the retail madness has spread far and wide, with many Australian stores taking part.

You’ll most often get the best deals on tech and home items during Black Friday, but discounts can be found across the board including with travel, services and more.

How do I make the most of Black Friday sales?

Even when you’re shopping for insanely good deals, it’s still worth paying attention to maximising your frequent flyer points earn. This will set you up in a better position for reward trave later on.

1. Use a rewards-earning credit card

We can’t stress this enough — if you have a credit card that earns points, use it! You’ll earn something for all your eligible purchases. When used correctly, credit cards can help your cash flow with interest-free days and you should always pay the balance off in full every month to avoid fees.

2. Check out with an online mall

Where possible, be sure to visit an online mall first. This includes Qantas Shopping, the Velocity e-Store, Cashrewards, KrisFlyer Spree, Asia Miles iShop and the ANZ Bonus Points Mall, to name a few.

Depending on the store, these online malls will award you with bonus points or cashback on eligible purchases. But choose carefully, as you can only take advantage of one online mall per transaction.

3. Linked Qantas to AfterPay? Use it

If you linked your Qantas Frequent Flyer account to AfterPay to earn bonus points, then be sure to make the most of this limited-time partnership! More and more retailers are using AfterPay now, and best of all, you can now use Amex cards for the fee-free repayments.

Summing up

You may be tempted to shop up a storm this Black Friday and Cyber Monday weekend. If you play your cards right (both literally and figuratively), then it’s possible to stack up some amazing offers to earn a decent chunk of frequent flyer points from every transaction.

Even though many of us can’t travel yet, those points will eventually become useful for booking reward flights and upgrades on domestic and hopefully, some international flights. So shop hard, but also shop smart!
