How to best use my 800,000 Velocity points?

So I’m planning on heading to Europe (Melb-Lon) with my wife in Late August 2019 for about 5 weeks and am wondering what the best use of my velocity points would be? I’ve only ever flown Economy but will have enough points to fly return Melb-Lon first class with either Singapore or Etihad. I’m trying to get all of the planning sorted now so when the seats become available I can book straight away.

I’ve done as much research as I could and have basically found out I won’t be able to use the points for the new Singapore A380 First Class suites which is what I was really hoping for. Therefore my questions become;

  • Is it still worth it to fly return First Class on Singapore Airlines? Through researching I believe there is still an A380 flight from Melb-Sin and then Sin-Lon so we would still be able to travel in the Suites, albeit the older version. Or should I just travel Business Class return on the same A380 and save the additional points for another trip? Or should I look to fly Etihad First Class (although their surcharges are significantly higher than Singapore regardless of which class you’re travelling in).

Any help and suggestions would be sincerely appreciated.

Cheers,
Rick

Hi rickm,

It really depends whether you want to use your points this trip or next. Do you accrue points easily enough?

You can still book the new suites at the moment but it will be nearly twice the amount of miles required and will have to be done in Krisflyer. This is now called Advantage (used to be called Standard). Usually, Saver seats are the ones to target. If you really want to try the new Suites, you have to pay more at the moment.

Your 800k VFF pts when transferred to Krisflyer yields about 600k Krisflyer miles and allows you access to old and new Suites that are reserved for Krisflyer members.

Hopefully, the new Suites will be redeemable as Saver in the near future. So it is a matter of when you want to fly Suites. The old Suites is still brilliant even though they are 10 years old. You also get the double bed in the old Suites. Really depends whether you want to be able to say you have been on the new Suites (bragging rights).

If you haven’t tried business, you could do Business to London and come back using Suites? Really depends how you want to use your points.

Try and fly out of Sydney for more A380 flights. The new suites are only available from Sydney and not Melbourne. Try and avoid flying out of UK too to avoid their departure tax (APD). You could train it to AMS or Paris and fly out of these ports to save on the taxes.
