New frequent flyer member - what is the best way to accumulate points as a couple?

Hey guys,

Hoping you could provide some advice.
Im an avid qantas point hoarder however my girlfriend is not affiliated with any. Almost everyones advice is “put all your eggs in one basket” but what if there is two baskets? We are trying to decide between two options.

  1. She gets a QFF credit card with high bonus and starts to go down the qantas avenue.
  2. She gets a virgin credit card and goes down that avenue where we can utilise eachothers frequent flyer programs.

Keen to get your ideas on this one.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the world of point collecting. You’ve come to the right place to ask for advice and get answers from some very knowledgeable people.

It’s a personal thing and differs from person to person. You need to figure out just what your ‘points goal’ is, do some research and then make a decision. You can always change your options later.

My wife and I took the two basket option. We live in WA so reward flights to the east are almost always available with Velocity and we can transfer these to Krisflyer should the need arise. In the other basket we are accumulating QFF points with a possible round the world in business class for two agenda.

Cheers

As Bofman has rightly mentioned its a “personal” thing.

I would prefer amex points. It gives u flexibility of transfer to multiple partners when u need it and slightly less points and taxes reqd. than qantas.

Also u can get bonus points (extra than amex website), if u apply thru referral links. I would say the best combo is “AMEX explorer” (currently on 60k bonus thru referral) and platinum edge later down the track.

Cheers.
