What methods of buying prepaid cards can be used to maximise points earn from Visa/MasterCard?

Hi all,

With Bankwest dropping the earn rate on my world MasterCard I’m looking for an alternative way of boosting my points earn where AMEX is either not accepted or a surcharge is incurred.

Does anyone know if it is possible to buy a prepaid Visa or MasterCard at a supermarket and then use that where AMEX can’t be??

Given you could earn up to 3x point per dollar I assume Prepaid Visa and MasterCards are excluded from earning points but I would like confirmation…

Ideally I would like to keep the card as I only pay $99 pa for the life of the card.

What are others planning to do when 20 June rolls around and Bankwest drop their points per dollar rates?

thanks in advance!!

Nic

Yes, absolutely. You need to look out for reload fees though - every prepaid cash card I know of that can be bought at a supermarket has one, and this can make the points earn redundant.

You will earn 3 MR on a Platinum Edge for any transaction at Coles/Woolworths, Amex do not differentiate based on what specifically you are purchasing

The main way this can make sense is if there is a promotion running on gift cards. Right now, Coles has a targeted offer for their prepaid MasterCards which offers 1,000 flybuys for each $100 card until May 18. The card load fee is $5. But 1,000 flybuys is worth $5 off a Coles shop, so this works out well.

Hi Keith,

Can anyone confirm that you can reload a prepaid master/visa using your AMEX at Coles our Woolies? I enquired about this several years ago and was told that it would be considered a cash advance not a purchase and therefore would not be eligible for points…

Cheers
