Any advice on redeeming USA domestic flights with Qantas points?

Hello Guys,

I have booked a trip for My Wife and I from Brisbane Australia to Las Angeles USA in September 2018.
We are looking at visiting a few of the cities nearby and was wondering what was the best way (if any) to book internal flights throughout the US with my Qantas Points.
We were planning…
LA to Vegas
Vegas to San Fran
San Fran to San Diego
San Diego to LA.
We would also require checked in luggage.

Any advice would be great!

Hi,

I could think of Alaskan Air and American Airlines as Qantas partner airlines in USA. You could check whether they fly the routes you are interested in.

Not very sure about baggage allowance. However, in general you have to pay for baggage in economy. Business class in US is probably closer to premium economy and First Class in US is closer to business class that we are more familiar with.

If the route is short and serviced by many airlines/flights, it may be more worthwhile to pay cash for an economy flight and keep your points for something more worthwhile. However, if the flights are expensive and you have to fly on that particular flight, it may work out to be worthwhile. Calculate the cents per point to see whether it is worthwhile using your hard earned points.

The Qantas Reward booking portal allows you to see American Airlines Reward availabilities.

In my view this is a fairly good way to use your points as bookings outside of Australia generally attract a much lower tax charge.

Obviously everyone values points differently so you should look at the cost of the flights in $ vs what you value the points to be at.
