How many Qantas points are required for First Class seats from Sydney to USA or Europe?

Hi All,

I started accumulating Qantas points and currently have about 180k. My goal is to fly at least once on First Class on a long haul flight from Sydney. Preferably to any US or European destination that allows to use Qantas points directly or via any other affiliated airline. Flexible on the destination city as we can plan the holiday starting from the destination we choose. We are a family of 4 with 2 adults and 2 kids. How far off am I in achieving my goal? Any information on how much point I need would be great for both First Class and Business Class. And what is the process in redeeming tickets? Do I have to buy Economy tickets and then upgrade or use points entirely to buy the First Class tickets? What other charges will be there when redeeming points like fuel surcharge and tax that you have to pay by cash?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi gayan-s,

From memory, it costs 192k Qantas points and taxes one-way in Qantas or Emirates First Class from Sydney to USA or EU.

Successful upgrades are rare if you do not have Qantas Frequent Flyer status. So I would not bet on it, personally.

Hi Warren,

Thanks for the reply. Was 192k to buy the ticket outright? If you want to upgrade an existing economy or premium economy it will be less?

Sydney to Los Angeles first class is 144k points.

You said you have about 180k, you'll need about 8 times that if you want to take your family of 4 in first class return.
