How awesome would it be if you could redeem reward flights and hotel nights in one go? Well, here’s the next best thing. Marriott’s Hotel + Air travel packages are quite possibly the holy grail of Marriott Bonvoy points collectors. In exchange for hundreds of thousands of Marriott points, you can get seven nights in a hotel of your choice and a big chunk of frequent flyer points or miles.

But don’t get fooled into thinking that every package is a great deal. As always, some redemptions are better than others. In this article, we delve deeper into the maths behind the packages to figure out which ones are most worthy of your hard-earned points.

How do I earn Marriott Bonvoy Points?

To get started, see our dedicated earning Marriott Bonvoy points guide for more info. Because you’re going to need a fair whack of points! Given that the travel packages range from 255,000 to 750,000 points, you’ll need to transfer a large number of points from American Express Membership Rewards, and/or stay at a lot of Marriott properties over a few years.

What are the Marriott Hotel + Air packages?

Marriott’s hotel and air packages start at a minimum of 255,000 Marriott Bonvoy points. You’ll get a voucher for seven nights in the hotel category of your choosing, plus either 50,000 or 100,000 frequent flyer miles/points.

At the time of writing, we don’t know how the Hotel + Air packages will be affected by the impending shift to dynamic pricing. But don’t be surprised if something does change, because hotel categories are being eliminated as well.

In the meantime, it’s fairly easy to understand how the packages work. Just choose how luxurious you’d like your stay to be, and whether you want 50,000 or 100,000 points or miles credited to your frequent flyer account.

6435,000 points510,000 points

When it’s time to redeem one of these packages, call up Marriott on 1-800-321-7396 (US) or 1800 251 259 (Australia). Just keep in mind the seven-night booking must be used consecutively at the hotel of your choice. Unfortunately, unused nights are forfeited – you can’t have four nights in one place and three in another, for example.

Which airlines can I use the Marriott Hotel + Air packages with?

Heads up: there is a very large list of airlines that will happily accept your haul of points or miles from Marriott Bonvoy. That’s great news for customers, as you have plenty of choices. The participating airlines most relevant to Australian travellers include:

Better yet, packages with United MileagePlus get a 10% bonus on air miles (so 55,000 miles or 110,000 miles included respectively). See the Marriott Travel package website for the full list of other participating airlines.

Are the Marriott Hotel + Air packages worth it?

To analyse the value of each travel package, we need to break it down into the air and hotel components. Normally, you’d need 120,000 Marriott points to get 50,000 airline miles, and 240,000 Marriott points to get 100,000 airline miles. This includes all transfer bonuses you’d normally get.

After subtracting 120,000 or 240,000 points from the respective travel packages, we’re left with the cost of the 7-night hotel benefit. We can compare that to the points you’d normally need for a 7-night standard redemption, including the 5th-night free.

We know – it’s a tad confusing. Essentially, a travel package is considered good value if the cost of the 7-night benefit included within the 50,000-mile or 100,000-mile package is less than the normal cost of a 7-night booking with Marriott Bonvoy points, including the fifth night free.

Summing up

If you can, try to aim for the 100,000 airline mile package from Category 4 to Category 7. That’s where you’ll get the best value overall with savings of up to 60,000 Marriott Bonvoy points.

If you are shooting for the 50,000 airline mile package instead, then consider Category 4 or 5 hotels only. Most of Marriott’s higher-end hotels in Australia are Category 5 anyway, so they’re a decent option for a domestic staycation.

The 7-night stay depends on availability, so make sure you have a few different options in mind when ringing up, in case your first option isn’t available. Of course, it’s wise to confirm availability for your chosen dates before you commit to purchasing a package.

With Marriott Bonvoy changing to dynamic pricing and removing hotel categories, now is the time to redeem Hotel + Air packages if you have enough points.
