I’m delving into the world of using points/miles, and don’t want to reinvent the wheel given the combined advice here!
Long and not so short.
Looking to book a return trip from Melbourne to Paris with Singapore Air - 2 adults, 1 child, 1 infant
Want to stop over for a few days in singapore both ways
Ideally want to upgrade from economy to premium economy at least the longer legs (Sing - Paris - Sing)
Questions are;
Whats the best use of my 150k Krisflyer miles - Upgrade from economy flex to premium economy or pay with miles and stay in economy…with kids…!
Does it make any difference to book the Melbourne-Singapore-Melbourne as one flight in Economy saver, and the Singapore - Paris - Singapore in economy flex to allow upgrade?
I’ve been told about a 15% discount, but not sure where this applies and Singapore airlines helpdesk is not so helpful so far…more of a statement.

First you’d be paying more out of pocket to get an Economy flex fare, so you’d want to be pretty sure you can lock that upgrade away. Be sure to check with KrisFlyer that you can confirm your upgrade before spending extra, don’t waitlist as your chances of it clearing as a no-status member would be low.
Unfortunately paying outright for Economy is also not great value thanks to the taxes that KrisFlyer impose - they are likely to be high and reduce the value of using your KF miles for an Economy redemption.
You might consider redeeming for one or two Premium Economy fares and then paying for one or two more? It might make sense buying SPG points or Amex Membership Rewards points if you can availability and need to top up.

If you are planning a stopover anyway then there is little practical difference in booking two seperate fares, and indeed you may need to if you want to secure award seats, as often the seat availability is different on a sector by sector basis rather compared to looking for MEL-CDG outright, even with a stopover.
The biggest downside to this plan would be if you weren’t stopping over, you would lose some protection on the connection between flights if something went wrong if travelling on two itineraries.

The 15% discount is applied for KrisFlyer redemption bookings made on Singapore Airlines when booked online instead of over the phone. Their website quotes prices without the discount in the results, and then with the discount once it calculates the total toward the top of the page. If you can book online, do, to get the discount
