Is it possible to use Etihad Guest points for booking on American Airlines or AA codeshare flights?

Hi,

I’m relatively new to the points game and have never booked on Etihad…I’m just looking at the AA award chart and have a relatively simple question – do the flights need to be AA operated or can you book an AA codeshare (i.e. on QF metal) using Etihad guest points?

Thanks!

Hi,

You can use your Etihad points for Etihad partner airlines. See here for the full list.

AA partner charts is for using AA miles on AA partner redemptions. E.g. Using AA miles to redeem Etihad flights.

  • Thanks, I’m not sure my question was clear – I’m interested in your first link – using Etihad points for Etihad partners. One of those partners is AA. When you refer to this partner chart (AA’s chart on Etihad’s website) my question is do the flights need to be AA or AA Codeshare?

Following on from that question, is it possible to use that award chart for SYD-BKK for example?

To be clear, I’m not referring to using AA points at all, I don’t have access to that currency, short of buying them. I’m looking to use Etihad miles.

    Thanks

I don’t think you can use Etihad points on AA partners. I believe it has to be AA metal. Not 100% sure about code-share, it could be possible.

However, it does say “AA and its affiliates” and AA doesn’t fly South Pacific to Asia. If you want to know for sure, call Etihad. Otherwise, you have to do your own research or wait for someone else to answer.
