Can I earn bonus points with an Amex Platinum Edge Referral as an existing cardholder?

I’ve just signed up for the Amex Velocity Platinum card and received it in the mail today.  I signed up to take advantage of the 110000 bonus points on offer.

After doing more research via this site, I’m now interested in applying for the Amex Platinum Edge also due to the better points earn rates.

As I’m already an Amex customer, I understand I won’t be eligible for the new customer 10000 point sign up offer.  However does anyone know if this rule applies to the 15000 point referral link sign up also?

Pretty sure the fine print is the same for both the 10k bonus and the 15k referral bonus. But here are the relevant terms and conditions for the latter:

2. Offer only available to new American Express Card Members who apply via this page by 31 October 2015, are approved and spend $500 on their new Card in the first 2 months of Card Membership. Card Members who currently hold or who have previously held any other Card product offered by American Express Australia Limited in the preceding 12 month period are ineligible for this offer. 15,000 Membership Rewards Bonus Points will be awarded to the eligible Card Member’s account 8-10 weeks after the spend criteria has been met. This advertised offer is not applicable or valid in conjunction with any other advertised or promotional offer.

I’ve bolded the relevant bits – but the answer is no. Sorry. 🙁

  • While that’s true on the basis of terms and conditions, this topic comes up quite often on the Ozbargain forums and anecdotally, existing cardholders often get the bonus referral points as well. It seems this rule is not always applied.

However, if you don’t get the points, you don’t have a leg to stand on in arguing with Amex (given how it clear it is in the T&Cs) so if you were going to get the card anyway, you should probably view it as a bonus. If you’re getting the card largely because of the bonus/referral, then you might want to rethink whether you’ll take the risk

  • Good point!

A few people I’ve chatted to have got both as well, but that seems to be the exception rather than the rule. :(
