LOYALTY PROGRAMS: Cathay Pacific Asia Miles

Asia Miles is one of our preferred programs for long-haul oneworld redemptions, with favourable pricing over Qantas Frequent Flyer, for example, on a number of routes.

Like most frequent flyer programs they have a number of partnerships for earning points from hotel stays – whether you book directly with the hotel or via an online travel agent.

They have extended their 30% bonus on Asia Miles earned from points transfers from a range of hotel partner programs until the end of February, which is pretty decent deal.

30% bonus on transfers promotion until 28 February 2017

Asia Miles have a 30% bonus running for transfers made from a number of hotel loyalty programs.

Phase 1 ran in December and Phase 2 now in January and February. All but two – notably Starwood Preferred Guest – are still eligible for transfers:

  • Le Club AccorHotels
  • Best Western Rewards
  • HHonors
  • Hyatt Gold Passport
  • IHG Rewards Club
  • Jin Jiang J-Club (excluded from Phase 2)
  • Jinling Elite Program
  • Marriott Rewards
  • New Century Club
  • Club Carlson Rewards Program
  • Regal Rewards
  • Shangri-La Golden Circle
  • Starwood Preferred Guest (excluded from Phase 2)
  • Wanda Club

The full list of transfer rates is available later in this guide and the full terms of the offer are here.

You’ll need to make the transfer before 28 February 2017 – transfers eligible for the bonus are defined by those which have an ‘activity date’ from the hotel rewards program of between 1 January and 28 February 2017, so you may want to leave a few days’ grace, just in case.

Annoyingly, it seems like the bonus won’t be instant, so don’t rely on this. From the terms:

The Bonus Asia Miles will be rounded up to the nearest whole Asia Miles. The Bonus Asia Miles will be credited to member’s Asia Miles account in 2 batches with the description “30% Hotel Points Conversion Bonus(2016)” on or before 31 March 2017 for phase 1 and on or before 31 May 2017 for phase 2, separately from the regular miles and the bonus miles for the partners’ individual joint promotion.

When it comes to buying Asia Miles there aren’t too many options.

Guide to earning Asia Miles from hotel stays

There are a few different ways that Asia Miles offer miles for staying at hotels – there are hotel rewards programs that are transfer partners with Asia Miles; hotels that offer more ‘direct earn’ options, where you stay and earn miles directly; plus a few Asia Miles earning options for bookings via online travel agents.

Earning Asia Miles by transferring from hotel rewards programs

All of the major hotel rewards programs are Asia Miles transfer partners – by making stays with them, and then earning points into their program, you can then choose to transfer them to Asia Miles a future date of your choice.

19 Twin Bedroom - Hyatt Regency Sha Tin 2 Bedroom Executive Suite

You can earn Asia Miles by transferring from points earned with Hyatt, such as in Hong Kong at the Hyatt Regency Sha Tin

These are the transfer partners and rates:

HotelsAsia Miles Transfer Rate
Accor Hotels1 mile for every 2 AccorHotels points
Best Western1,000 miles for every 5,000 Best Western Rewards Points
Hilton1,000 miles for every 10,000 HHonors points
Hyatt1 mile for every 2.5 Hyatt Gold Passport Points
IHG1 mile for every 5 IHG Rewards Club Points
Jin Jiang International600 miles for every 6,000 Jin Jiang J-Club points
Jinling Hotels & Resorts500 miles for every 3,200 Jinling Points
Marriott1,500 miles for every 10,000 Marriott Rewards points
New Century Hotel & Resorts300 miles for every 1,600 New Century Points
Park Plaza1 mile for every 10 Gold Points
Radisson1 mile for every 10 Gold Points
Regal Hotels1,000 miles for every 15,000 points
Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts1 mile for every 1 Golden Circle Award Point
Starwood Hotels and Resorts1 mile for every 1 Starpoint
Wanda Hotels & Resorts1 mile for every 4 Wanda Club Points

In many cases you will probably get more value out of redeeming the points with the hotel chain for hotel stays – but in some circumstances, such as emptying out an account or during a bonus period, it will make more sense to transfer out.

Earning Asia Miles with Kaligo

We have a full guide to Kaligo here along with a list of their current promotions, but in short, Kaligo is an online travel agent that offers points back from your hotel bookings, typically at least several hundred miles per night.

kaligo-homepage

The more expensive hotels – or where Kaligo have at least added more commission to fund more miles on offer – can offer several thousand bonus miles per night.

You can get started earning Asia Miles via Kaligo here.

Earning Asia Miles via Hotels.com

You can pick up more Asia Miles using their partnership with Hotels.com too.

You’ll receive 2 Asia Miles per 10 HKD spent, which is a return of just under 1 Asia Mile per AUD or NZD.

Bookers in the following regions need to start their hotel search via the links below, and then enter your Asia Miles membership number at check out:

Australia
China
Hong Kong
India
Japan
Malaysia
Singapore
South Korea
Taiwan
Thailand

You don’t need to be staying in those regions, just make the booking from those regional Hotels.com websites in the local currency.

When you see the Asia Miles logo in the top of the Hotels.com site, you know you are in the right place:

hotels-com-asia-miles

You can also collect Hotels.com Rewards – here’s our full guide – which are essentially a 10% credit for a future stay. These are way more valuable than the 1 Asia Mile per AUD/NZD on offer so should be the goal, and if you’re focusing on Hotels.com then you will probably get a better return by using a cashback portal like Cash Rewards.

Which is the best option?

This is very difficult to answer. Often Kaligo will come out on top in terms of pure points earned from a single stay, especially during a promotional period, but you have to be careful about comparing their prices.

If you stay frequently and are going after hotel program elite status with a single chain, then you’ll probably be earning points with their program anyway and not prioritising Asia Miles earn as much, in which case the large number of transfer partners is a useful win.

The Hotels.com kickback of 2 Asia Miles per 10 HKD is not high, but during promotional periods again this could become more lucrative, and it’s a great sweetener on top of the Hotels.com night credits earned. It’s not a reason to choose Hotels.com outright though.

I don’t think there is a ‘right answer’ to this, but at least there are large number of options for earning Asia Miles from hotel stays to choose from.
