I’m not sure if this will always work, but I was trying to redeem a return CBR – SIN business class saver flight in October, now that SIA has opened up the direct service. When I booked, my return leg was waitlisted. I got a notification that I had to confirm my outbound non-waitlisted flight within 72 hours or risk losing it.
I called SIA and managed to get the Ticketing Time Limit for Redemption extended until 2 months before I was due to fly. However, I thought that I’d try to see if I could get a confirmed one way flight back from SIN via SYD or MEL only to find that if I booked the SIN-CBR flight as a one way flight, I could get a confirmed booking. So I cancelled the original booking and booked two confirmed one way legs CBR-SIN. The taxes actually came in about 40 AUD cheaper (no idea why).
The moral is that you should always check to see if you can get confirmed flights on two one way journeys, before relying on a waitlisted return journey.
Nice tip, thanks for adding this!
