American Airlines are promoting their new Sydney to LA route launch to AAdvantage members on both sides of the Pacific with bonus AAdvantage miles on flights taken between February 1st and 31st May 2016.

You’ll need to register for this promotion here using promotion code ‘AUS16’, and book yourself onto an American ‘marketed’ flight – which can include Qantas operated flights if booked through American Airlines.

You’ll earn 30,000 AAdvantage bonus miles on First or Business Class fares, 15,000 bonus miles on Premium or Full-fare Economy fares and 5,000 bonus miles on Economy fares on each round-trip between the U.S. /Canada and Australia.

AAdvantage miles are worth around twice the same amount of Qantas Points, so this is worth taking note of. If your travel plans fit, it might make sense to start crediting points to American instead of Qantas.

I find this promotion interesting beyond the bonus miles – it doesn’t specifically exclude itineraries starting in Australia, meaning that Qantas and American are somewhat starting to compete for frequent flyer member attention.

Here are the bonus points on offer:

You can register and travel any time up until the 31st May 2016 to earn the bonus.
